Smehlik heading for Atlanta

ATLANTA - Richard Smehlik has flown south for the winter.
The defenseman, who spent the first 10 years of his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres, signed with the Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday.
Smehlik, an unrestricted free agent who made it clear he would not be returning to Buffalo for the 2002-03 season, signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with Atlanta that includes two one-year team options at the same price.
The 32-year-old Smehlik made $1.65 million for the Sabres last season, one that was plagued by injuries and an occasional benching from coach Lindy Ruff. Smehlik missed 15 games with a shoulder injury and finished with three goals and a career-low nine points in 60 games. More....
