49ers in trouble if denial continues

It's called living in denial. That's exactly what the 49ers and general manager Terry Donahue are doing when it comes to their defensive secondary.

Donahue appears ready to stick with the same overmatched, undermanned secondary the 49ers had last year.

The 49ers haven't signed a single top-notch unrestricted or restricted free agent defensive back.

    Strike one.

They didn't draft a single defensive back.

    Strike two.

On Sunday, a new crop of veteran free agents should start hitting the open market. But 49ers coach Dennis Erickson said last week he doesn't expect any quality defensive backs to be among those salary cap victims cut loose.

    Strike three?
