Amidst some controversy indicating that Jones and/or McKenzie will be the answer at the other DE position, I am curious as to how good we are expecting them to be this season.

Here are their career profiles:

Jones: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/stats?statsId=3530

McK: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/stats?statsId=3619

Last full season played:

Jones: 2001, T.B., 25 total tackles (15 solo), 3 sacks

McKenzie: 2000, Cleveland, 58 total tackles (51 solo), 8 sacks

I'll let you know when the season starts. ;)

I'd say they're situational players. Both have played inside, both have played outside. They'll be what Jim Jeffcoat was a few years ago. If between the two we get 8 sacks, I'll be pleased.

i think they will both have about 15-20 sacks each... schobel will break strahans record with 25.

Judging by some of your other comments today I'm half thinking your serious.

Individually, there are probably about the same as Ahanotu, but rotating them should hopefully make them each more effective due to less snaps each. To put it another way, they should be at least as good as him, with the potential to do much more. (Ahh, the dreaded "p" word).

Jones can be a very good pass rusher if he is back to form. Jones didn't do all that well his last year because of a switch in positions and because Simeon Rice came along to move him. Jones I think is a faster and better version of Kenny Holmes. McKenzie I see as a 3rd down pass rush specialist.

If he's so good 80, then how come he really hasn't done much in 6 seasons? He had one excellent year an average one, and then he essentially did nothing. That's not exactly what you'd expect out of a former 1st-rounder.

I'm not being smart, I'm truly asking why he hasn't done much. I have no idea but I have to assume that there's a reason however and that it wasn't simply for lack of opps b/c the coach didn't like him. Especially on such a defensively oriented team.

Obviously his 1st 3 years he was slow to develop, but his 4th and 5th years, are very impressive and showed that he was coming along very nicely, and then the position switch and the injury. I think Jones will be a very nice addition to the club and the best end on our squad.

I'd say they're average to above average. Just remember, with Pat and Sam tying up 3-4 blockers on every play and Posey pressuring from the outside, an average DE will be much more effective.

I haven't seen either of them play, I'll reserve judgement until then.
