Emmitt Smith is approaching his 14th NFL season, and he already has made enough money to keep his grandchildren's children in Reeboks for the rest of their lives.

He is the exception to the rule. The NFL is not forever, and neither are the fat checks that make the game such a financial bonanza for those talented enough to profit from it. The harsh reality is that the average NFL career spans only 3 1/2 years, which obviously isn't long enough for a player to secure his future, let alone the future of his heirs.

It is a point Texans director of player programs Todd Scott constantly stresses to the players. If Scott is around, rest assured someone is getting an earful about financial planning, continued education programs or post-football careers.

Players look forward to the offseason because it provides an opportunity for rest, relaxation and quality time with their families, but several Texans spent this offseason doing internships.

Kicker Kris Brown learned the finer points of financial planning and real estate at Redstone Golf Management. Tight end Jabari Holloway worked at Reebok. Inside linebacker Jay Foreman spent time with the ASCA Investment Group, while outside linebacker Kailee Wong interned with Houston city council member Gordon Kwan.

Among others, running back James Allen worked at Houston-based Music World, home of the Grammy-award winning group Destiny's Child, and Dwaune Jones, Kyries Herbert and Shawn Worthen did coaching internships.

"It's always important to do this sort of thing while you're still playing rather than to wait until you're out of the game," Scott said. "The NFL can stand for Not For Long.

"At some point, you have to take the jersey off, and when you do, you want to be prepared to slide into something else. If you've already been preparing for that while you're still playing, you're ahead of the game."

Good position taken by the organization. Too many players get holes burning in their pockets while playing, or get tricked into BS schemes, and lose it. These guys need to get themselves in position to be secure forever, even if it be in a career after football.
