 Well deserved! I thought that he was one of the hardest fighting players in pre-season.

Will probably cost us a few big plays...

but that's ok, he should make up for it with his agressive hard play.

That about guarantees that Vinny and the Jets will be throwing on opening day. I hope Coy doesn't give up too many big pass plays!

Jets will not beat us through the air........only on the ground with Martin

At least we have a veteran backup in Jenkins. I guess they aren't planning on being a big factor in the playoffs.

Here is a link to the quotebook where GW and Wire talk a little about the decision.

Jenkins will still get some playing time. My guess is that Jenkins will come in on passing downs. I like Wire's play making ability I just hope that he learned from the huge play he gave up against the Lions.

Hmmm, this worries me. Yeah, Wire had a good offseason, but he is still a rookie. I thought Jenkins did a better job and should be the starter. Besides...isn't it a known statement that the more rookies that you have starting, the worse off you are? Here's the list....

Starting Rookies:
RT Mike Williams
WR Josh Reed
SS Coy Wire
DT Justin Bannan

Backup Rookies:
DE Ryan Denney
CB Jason Bostic
DE Grant Irons

3rd String Rookies:
C/G Mike Pucillo
WR Andre Rone
LB Dominique Stevenson
CB Kevin Thomas

4th String Rookies:
RB Joe Burns

I'm with ya on that one, Mikey.
Pucillo is 2nd string though.

I agree its not a great sign for the talent on your team if you are starting a lot of rookies. but if your rookies perform better than the veterans is it not right to start them?

If your rookies perform better than your veterans you suck.

i think its obvious that we arn't going to make it to the superbowl this year. i would rather have the rookies get the experience this year and be better next year, when we can make a serious run at it. Wire is a solid player, with a litte playing time he could be a damn good player.

Maybe we drafted the rookies because they have talent....isn't that the point of drafting??

The_Philster

He's never played SS before though, casdhf. I think he may be in for a rude awakening once he starts seeing real game action...not this preseason stuff. I hope I'm wrong though.

I'm sure, but there's not other way to get the talent experience without playing them

whatever makes you happy Arctic....:D

i have been saying for weeks that Wire should be a starter. The fact that he is a little hottie has nothing to do with that.

i, for one, am happy we have inserted a hard hitting playmaker on defense.. i like the kid alot.. he has done everything that he has been asked, and as GW said.. he hasnt made the same mistake twice.. so i am not so worried about him giving up the big play.. i am looking forward to having an extra runstopper though..

i guess urlacher shouldnt have started either as a rookie.. regardless of the fact taht he was making play after play.. or kendrel bell? judge him after we see him in the real fire.

urlacher was picked 8th overall. almost all first round picks start their rookie year. Wire was picked with a Compensatory Pick at the end of the 3rd round (97th overall). there is a huge difference. im always for starting the young guys. go wire.:shelby:

If someone wins the job, then you have to give it to him - thats the way the merit system works.

I agree John. I think this kid could have been a first-rounder if he played safety in college.

I think Wire might actually be a better strong safety prospect than his Strong Safety teammate at Stanford, Tank Williams. I'll bet he's not starting.

I think there is often a pretty good correlation between the number of rookies who make a team and the previous year's record. The worse the record, the more rookies. Rookies are actually a sign of a team in transition. That has certainly been the case since TD arrived and was given the challenge to lead us out of salary cap hell.

number of rookies that make the team are also an indication of the quality of your drafting skills, imho.

I think GW's tactic with that move is to win half of the finfans (from So. Beach) over.
No thank you.:D

I think it also has to do with the salary cap next year. If I'm correct, there will be a pretty good chunk of change to spend, and with these rookies and 2nd year players being cheaper than seasoned vets, as long as they perform as expected, next will be dedicated to signing players to make a run for the SB.
