I just saw this story on Yahoo and had to share it. What the **** makes any ref think that is a first down? Horrible call!

Is it just me or are the refs worse than ever this year? I've seen so many bad calls and we are only at week 6. :ill:

Cleveland seems to get one ridiculous call go against them after another.

The FG in OT vs the Bengals that was called good and now this one.

I'm not as upset with this one because it didn't change the outcome of the game, but it's clearly not a first down.

The FG that Cincy kicked was actually good...

Im not saying the image is doctored because I know the play that the article refers to. But if I may ask, why is the refs arm pointing the wrong direction if in that picture he calls it a first? His arm should be extended to the toward the first down stick not away from it as it is in that pic.

I was wondering the same thing and then found a video. It was another ref moving some people out of the way....

It was called a first down on the field.

Pittsburgh got a FG right before halftime after this.

Probably just the camera angle... I mean isnt that how they explained the 'music city miracle' BS?

/sarcasm

Before the camera zooms in, look at the yard marker... it is on an angle, so that camera view is not straight on. I say good call by the referees.

Just like tonight...

How was that catch by Stokley a TD?

Or last night...

How was that "catch" by Knox a catch for a TD?

Exactly. They've been pretty awful in all the games I have watched this year. :ill:

i'm been thinking about this for a little while, but isn't it interesting that every year, some team misses on a pick for selecting a player in the draft, yet the NFL supposedly has never missed on its ref selection. They don't let you criticize the ref or say they are wrong.

with the exception of the hochuli mistake last year, they won't admit that someof the refs are awful. Jeff luckett still refs and he missed the coin flip. Walt Coleman of tuck rule fame is still out there botching calls up on a weekly basis. yet they won't admit one ref (who make less than $1MM a year) has every been incorrectly scouted, yet teams that spend millions on scouting, finding GMs and signing players are wrong on players anywhere from 30%-90% of the time.

It just doesn't add up. There have to be bad refs in the league.

I actually thought the refs did a good job this weekend prventing anything from getting too out of hand... there were some cheap shots and near brawls.

The Stokley play was very questionable. I Agree with you, i don't think that was a TD. But the thing i loved about that, is Jon Gruden said if he were the coach on 4th and goal in that situation, he'd def go for it. The more i listen to Gruden the higher he gets on my wish list.

Were the Browns arguing it during the game?

That's a bad camera angle. The camera is behind the ball at an angle. If you look at the diagram below, even though the "ball" is touching the first down line, there is an apparent gap between the ball and the measuring stick (the little blue circle). That's exactly what you're seeing in the picture of the actual measurement. If you looked at it from ahead of the first down line, it would appear that the nose of the ball was well ahead of the marker. It's called parallax. <!-- / message --> <!-- attachments -->

I just drew a diagram for my own use. It appears to me, judging from the angle of the hash mark on the wider angle shot that the angle of the camera shot is enough that it might make it appear as if the tip of the ball doesn't quite reach the marker when in fact it does. It's far from a sure thing, but there is enough of a question mark that I have to give the official the benefit of the doubt. Mad Bomber's diagram is pretty close to what I had with pen and paper.

Better call than the play at third in the Yankees game.
