Hypothetically, knowing what we know now, do you take Byrd, who the 49ers had targeted at #43 in the 2009 draft, or take the trade that Carolina pulled off where they traded the 2010 #1 pick to San Francisco for the right to select DE Everette Brown? I'd personally take the guy who is playing safety right now in the Bills defensive backfield! Opinions??

Considering how Carolina are playing a trade would have resulted in a high pick in 2010 which will more likely provide the ammunition to get an elite LT plus a franchise QB.

Byrd has done exceptionally well, but Atogwe is a ballhawk for the Rams too. A franchise LT and a franchise QB are more valuable long term than a ballhawk Safety

and if we'd ended up with two R1 next year plus maybe a high R2, then one of the picks could have been Eric Berry FS, who has a height advantage over Byrd

I like what I see in Byrd but Carolina will get a top 10 pick so you could land your franchise left tackle and QB bewteen that pick and our pick.

Man time flies, they traded a 2010 1st round pick for a 2nd rounder in that draft? I dont remember that.

That isn't that uncommon at all.

except that ballhawk safety has pretty much been our MVP the last 2 weeks and pretty much caused us to beat the Panthers.

I admit i didnt like the pick since all we do is draft DBs but it is nice to see one fit the billing for a change
If i could do it all over again u can bet ur ass i would have drafted an OT we need that more than anything...well except a QB

I don't know. The question at this point has to be: how much do you trust the Bills to draft a quality player in the first round?

While Byrd obviously still needs to prove himself over time, he's shown that he can play at this level. Any other draft pick is still a risk, even Eric Berry.

Did the Panthers ever make an offer to the Bills for their 2nd rounder? Because if they didn't, the hypothetical is moot.

The Panthers really screwed that one! Brown doesn't look like anything and cost them probably a top-5 pick next year, at least top-10.

I'll take the Byrd in the hand.

Keep Byrd, especially in hindsight.. 5 interceptions for a rookie??? Seriously?? That's a pro bowl year for a seasoned vet like Ed Reed, hopefully he can keep it up.

Keep Byrd. He's playing like a 1st rounder and we've been searching for a ball hawking safety for over a decade.

He's playing like a hall of famer, the only question is whether or not he can maintain anywhere close to the degree he is playing at now.

Take the sure thing. Our hypothetical franchise LT and QB may end up being in the Mike Williams and JaMarcus Russell molds.

It must be painful for the entire Raiders organization and fans to watch their #1 pick Qb.

For those people that remeber that this type of trade is done from time to time, the Washington Redskins had Bobby Beathard as their G.M. (circa 1080's), and he'd trade a first rounder "next year" for a second rounder nearly EVERY year he was in D.C.!! His rationale was that the guy they "targeted" was a first rounder that had slipped through to the second round and he was gaining the VALUE of a first rounder immediately! Makes sense IF you trust your scouting department!!
