    State lacking money for Saints

Louisiana's landmark $186.5 million contract with the Saints faces a multimillion-dollar shortfall this year, due largely to a failure to sell naming rights to the Superdome. And while state officials say they will make the $12.5 million commitment due the team by July 1, the deficit could be greater in future years, state and team officials said Tuesday.

The state plans to compensate for the shortfall, approximately $6 million, this year with a grant from SMG, the private company that operates the Superdome for the state, and money normally funneled for Superdome capital repairs, said Superdome general manager Doug Thornton and Sen. Ken Hollis, R-Metairie.
