Question about hiring next year's coach now

Let's say Shanahan meets with Ralph, and accepts the truck load of cash offered to him. Is Buffalo in trouble for violating the Rooney Rule? How does that exactly work?

I would think so however I'm also guessing they won't care at this point.

    How much is the fine?

Is it just a fine, or can the league block the signing? IF it's just a fine, I agree, who gives a crap. But if the league can take away draft picks, or nix the deal, then I'd be worried.

Lions were fined $200k in 2003 for violating the rule.

They'll interview Fewell for ****s and giggles. Problem solved.

Sure, but how can you interview him for next year now, while he's the temporary Head Coach?

One could argue that installing Fewell as the interm coach would show a further commitment to the Rooney Rule than just some token interview. Just mental musing though, not sure if the NFL would buy it.

I listened to WGR a bit before work this morning and while they weren't sure, it sounds like the act of putting Fewell in as the interim coach kind of bypasses the rule. I would think he would get a formal interview at the end of the year to make sure they don't get fined, but who knows if they are going after a new coach now.

Regardless, if it's a fine, take it. You hire the best man for the job. I would think a token interview is more insulting than just not getting one.

exactly- Fewell is their end-around on the Rooney Rule.
