    Bills wanted Gruden

    Bills Targeted Jon Gruden

    ESPN Analyst staying on TV

Updated: Friday, 20 Nov 2009, 10:28 PM EST
Published : Friday, 20 Nov 2009, 10:28 PM ESTBUFFALO (WIVB) - Jon Gruden as the Bills new head coach? If Ralph Wilson had his way, it would have happened. Sources tell News 4 Sports that Gruden was the top choice of the Bills to replace Dick Jauron.
Those sources say the team "went after him hard," including a face-to-face meeting, but could not convince Gruden to leave his job as analyst on ESPN's Monday Night Football.
Monday, Gruden agreed to a contract extension with the network. That has dampened some of the talk about his return to coaching in either the NFL or college football.
As coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Gruden won Super Bowl XXXVII. He also coached the Oakland Raiders.
Along with reports of interest in Mike Shanahan, it appears that the Bills are aiming high in their coaching search. Gruden and Shanahan are two of the six Super Bowl-winning coaches that are not currently working.
News 4 Sports reported Thursday that the Bills offered Jauron the chance to remain as the head coach for the rest of the season. He declined. The benefit for the Bills is that they can now openly pursue other coaching candidates.

Interesting...on to their 2nd choice...Shanahan...would not be surprised to have a new coach in a few weeks if they were that serious for Gruden.

so we basically told Jauron he was gone after the season...and he refused to stay? Doesn't that mean he quit?

So we said to him, we are going to start searching now while you are the coach, but your gone Jan 4

                Hmmmmmmm....

They might be able to get away with hiring Shanahan whenever they want to since they made Fewell the interim coach.

If they hire Shanahan next week, FishSquish week just got interesting.

hire Shanahan...he uses the rest of the season to evaluate, takes over Jan 4th as the official head coach.

These are the things that bother me about this organization, even when they're on the right track, apparently ready to finally spend some money on a real coach, etc., they always find a way to make you question wtf they're thinking..

I wouldn't have been extremely disappointed with Gruden, but in what universe is he the 'top choice' to 'go hard after' ahead of guys like Cowher, Shanahan, Holmgren..?

i guess we should just be happy they are targeting the big names we want....but with Jauron refusing to stay the rest of the season, isnt that quitting and thus voiding the contract?

so let me get this straight...so Jauron may have quit? You do know what that means right? He forfeits the $6 million left on his contract! That money will now be allocated to snag one of these coaches.

Kudos to the Bills F.O. to bring Gruden in. A face to face already? Impressive. We really hammer these guys all the time, but doing this already is awesome in my book. The only thing I can fault them for is if they low balled him, but I highly doubt that to be the case.

I doubt what he did would be considered quitting, if they told him he was going to be fired and gave him an option.

sounds like some leverage towards a settlement to me.
