Maybe the paint is detectable using some sort of sensor. Magnetic perhaps - you can put magnetic dust down and use a sensor to find it below allowing you to paint on flat surfaces (easier) and then mark it from above and cut out.

I'm starting to notice that the green in the field may be a darker color the than the bench areas, while originally they looked to be the same color.
