With that Achilles injury, is that why all these teams strayed away from him?

He was on the Steelers O-line when they won the SB in '05, you think he would be highly sought after. I also read he was signed by the Pats before this season to a 3 year deal, but then they cut him. Is he just not effective after the injury or what?

He should be able to step right in and start in Wood's place. He has to be better than any other guard on the roster.

Good signing IMO... He must have a little something left in that he'll get the $.8M vet minimum (pro-rated of course).

The Bills are in desperation mode regarding the O-line. I think at one time the Bills opted not to pursue Simmons because they were determined to have the biggest, fattest line in the league and Simmons didn't fit that mold. That didn't sork out so well. The only problem with Simmons would be any lingering health and mobility issues with his achilles. This is probably the best signing we could hope for at this point in the season.

I'm worried about the injury, but given the situation we're in and the timing, it's the best we could hope for.

let's see what he's got. If he plays well its a huge addition without costing much

It's inevitable for him to re-injure himself once he puts on that jersey this weekend. Just watch.

If he is fully healthy and can play at the level he played at last season he is an upgrade over Wood and Levitre.

Wood should become what Simmons was essentially. A tough, powerful, not too heavy not too light OG that can excel in any scheme. Equally effective in both blocking in space and as an in-line blocker.

We need vets and under our present condition we are probably not going to find a better one.

A great move given the situation

This staff seems to really know what the hell they are doing...Jauron has just been holding them back. They finally got rid of "Hanging 10 with Hamden" and got a guy that has a legitimate shot of being our starting QB. They go out and get the best available free agent guard, who we've been talking about forever to go and get. They decide to go with Fitzy, and he's been playing well. These moves, except the Fitz move, would not have been done under Jauwrong.

I think the Pats would have kept Simmons around for insurance, but they were kind of forced to release him. After they signed him they were happy with his health and practice skills, but he was inactive for all but one week. The Pats were forced to activate Kyle Arrington from the PS or he was going to sign with Tampa. To make room the released Simmons. He was the odd man out because they had some younger OL they didn't want to lose and he didn't contribute on ST.

Like I said, they liked having him around as an insurance policy because he was versatile enough to work any position on the OL. However, with some young OL they didn't want to lose and the need to create a roster spot, he became a luxury they couldn't make room for. Belichick had good things to say about him and stated his release was not performance-based but due to roster issues.

It makes a lot of sense for the Bills to sign him.

This is what Belichick had to say (http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extra_points/2009/11/patriots_releas_8.html) when Simmons was released:

"Kendall really worked hard," Coach Bill Belichick said. "Really had a lot of admiration for him. He's a pro. Came to work early, stayed late, worked hard. Just managing the roster here. It's definitely not something we were looking to do, but we've got to try to manage our team."

This is what he was talking about (http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4647973/arringtons-promotion-came-after-manginis-bid) when he said he had to "manage the roster":

When the Patriots promoted cornerback Kyle Arrington from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster last Friday, it was a result of another team attempting to sign him.

The Patriots didn't want to lose Arrington so they bumped him up to the active roster. In turn, they released veteran Kendall Simmons in a move that coach Bill Belichick said the team wasn't planning on making.

Simmons just got caught up in a numbers game as the Pats have good depth on the OL, especially once Mark LeVoir was activated off the PUP.

Another benefit of having Simmons is he is a veteran who has played for winning teams, including Super Bowl winners. He can show some of the Bills young OL how a pro prepares and does the job.
