    CB Webster undergoes ankle surgery

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (May 29, 2003) -- San Francisco 49ers cornerback Jason Webster had arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome left ankle.

Webster, who has started 42 games in his three seasons with the Niners, should be completely recovered in time for training camp, coach Dennis Erickson said.

"They just had to tighten some things up," Erickson said of the surgery. "He's about four weeks away from being full speed."

Webster severely sprained his ankle Dec. 30 in the regular-season finale against St. Louis. He missed both of San Francisco's playoff games because of the injury.

He participated in the 49ers' first minicamp last month, but aggravated the injury. Team doctors waited nearly a month before recommending surgery, hoping the ankle would heal on its own.

San Francisco is thin at cornerback, with no proven veterans behind starters Webster and Ahmed Plummer. The team hopes to sign another cornerback before training camp opens July 25.
