Those that know former Pittsburgh (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=pit) coach Bill Cowher say he now is gearing up to return to the NFL next season. Cowher is mentally preparing himself to return to coaching and contemplating how he would structure his organization, according to those that know him. With a return on the horizon, many around the league believe the most logical landing spot, by far, is the Carolina Panthers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=car), where speculation is mounting that Panthers coach John Fox is on the endangered list. Of course, Fox has been there before and always has done what he could to keep his job. But this time, the Panthers have a newly hired president, Danny Morrison, who has no ties or connections to anyone in the organization other than Jerry Richardson. A source connected to the Panthers source said he expects the team to pursue Cowher, who lives in North Carolina and has been waiting for the ideal opportunity to return to coaching.

No worries Shelby:

1) He isn't the only fish in the sea
2) Carolina hasn't fired there HC yet
3) Cowher may not feel the FO will do whats necessary to get serious
4) He may not want to be under a GM
5) They may not offer him enough control
6) They may not offer as much money
7) They don't have a QB either

Really, the only thing they have over us is location... and that could be huge or make up for other negatives... I cant read his mind... but neither can Shefter.

Can we wait till the chickens hatch?

When Shanahan, Cowher, Gruden, Dungy, Holmgren, and Shotty all have gigs elsewhere, and we have a new guy who isn't any of them, I will be frustrated.

Cowher is not coming to Buffalo, period, and his name has been linked to Carolina since immediately after he left Pittsburgh.

The Chin will go to the best monetary situation unless the Carolina job is open. So let us hope Fox stays and then wave $12 million greens in his face.

Worst case scenario, Fox would be an upgrade over Jauron and Fewell.

Wow. That's really going out on a limb, considering it's been predicted for the last year by everyone if John Fox had another losing season

Exactly. New article doesn't necessarily mean new information.

I thought he didn't want to go to a team with no QB?

I can not begin to tell you how boring John Fox style of football is to watch. In today's Charlotte Observer one of the articles is named "Even in victory, Panthers bore fans to turnstiles."
There had to be 25,000 no shows in the stands yesterday. Factoring the Buc fans at the game you are talking aboutonly 40-45K Panther fans. If/when he is let go I truly hope the Bills do not go for the guy. He will make die hard fans fall asleep at the games. Someone in front of me was sleeping for over a quarter of the game in his seat yesterday.

Two NFC Championship appearances, one Super Bowl, and another playoff appearance that was a 12-4 season with a bye. Is he my first choice? No. But I'd take him over some unproven bottom-of-the-barrel type like the Bills have gone for. It's certainly a better track record than what has gone on up here this decade.

In a new spin on the Cowher to Carolina possibilities, Jason Cole from Fox Sports says:

"With coaching vacancies expected in Cleveland, Washington and Oakland, there is a big question about what will happen in Carolina. One source thinks coach John Fox and GM Marty Hurney, who each have a year left on their contracts, will keep their jobs. “I think [owner Jerry] Richardson would like to get rid of them, but I’m not sure he wants to pay off the $6 million he owes them."

I dont think Cowher to Carolina is a given... add in that Holmgren may get hired in Cleveland and Buffalo is still in the mix.

The problem is, if Carolina isn't in the mix, a nicely paying TV studio job always will be until that hometown job opens up.

Unless you really want to coach again and are just looking for total control, big money, and a not-so-meddling owner, maybe even a blue-collar town... like, say, Buffalo.

One would hope that's the case.
