    Besides the obvious

of Drew Brees and Brett Favre, who are the last big name free agent QBs to sign a contract with a new team and make them instant contenders? I don't count Favre because he wanted the Vikings the whole time.

I see some people say we need a big name FA and I just don't remember it helping all that much or even seeing any big name free agent QBs.

    Pennington as well last year.

However, top-notch QBs don't hit the free agent market, for obvious reasons. If you find a quality QB, you hold onto them generally. San Diego sort of screwed themselves by mis-evaluating Brees and then drafting Rivers, thus necessitating letting Brees walk. Most other free agent QBs are let go because of injury concerns or performance.

Long story short, hoping to find the next QB who leads us to the playoffs in free agency is a pipe dream.

If Philly lets McNabb walk so they can start the Kolb era, he has a lot left in the tank.

Oh yeah.... Doug Flutie came here and led us to the playoffs.

What do you guys think of Troy Smith as a guy to put in the mix at QB? I believe he's a FA in 2010 and the people here in Baltimore think pretty highly of him. He has shown flashes in limited opportunities and, though he's been a team player w/Flacco being drafted and all, he definitely has the fire burning in him to be a starter. He could be a low risk/high reward type FA signing. His biggest knock is his height, but he's basically the same size as Brees.

McNabb would be an amazing signing if it were ever possible.

            Wow, holy good idea batman.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
            It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

                Re: Besides the obvious

Pennington was a decent name, but to be honest, I don't believe anybody thought he could do anything. Flutie was a sideshow signing and nobody thought anything of him either. The last big name besides Brees to be a free agent was Warner or Bledsoe and neither did anything with the teams that signed them right away.

My point is that high profile FAs don't come along often and even when they do, they don't guarantee success either.

                I would love McNabb BTW.

I have always liked him, idk why bc i dont like OSU, but I dont want him to be the "answer"...if we brought him in to compete and see what he's got i'd like that.

He will be cut. He made his team way better. Kind of like what Vince Young is currently doing.
