View Full Version : Rank these former 1st round QBs

Coach Sal

I'm doing some research regarding the Bills potentially drafting a QB in the 1st round. But before I get to the nuts and bolts, I need some feedback.

(I know draz just started a thread about 1R QBs. Not trying to stomp on it, you should check that out too. I'm just trying to get some info, so I apologize draz)...........

Rank these former 1st round QBs in order from best (1) to worst (14), as far as their NFL careers so far.

I'M NOT CONCERNED WITH THEIR "VALUE" ACCORDING TO WHERE THEY WERE PICKED. SIMPLY RANKED FROM BEST TO WORST CAREERS SO FAR.

I did not include this last draft (not enough of a body of work yet), and went back 5 years before that, which is about enough to get some data for what I'm looking for:

2004
Eli Manning
Philip Rivers
Ben Roethlisberger
JP Losman

2005
Alex Smith
Aaron Rodgers
Jason Campbell

2006
Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Jay Cutler

2007
JaMarcus Russell
Brady Quinn

2008
Matt Ryan
Joe Flacco

Thanks. I'll let this sit for a couple days and get some feedback, then use it for what I'm doing.

2004

Eli Manning
Philip Rivers
Ben Roethlisberger
JP Losman
I'd take any of the 3 besides Losman.

2005

Alex Smith
Aaron Rodgers
Jason Campbell
I'd take Smith and Rodgers. Campbell hasn't been horrible, Avg at best

2006

Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Jay Cutler
I still think Leinart has a shot to be a good QB, Young has proved himself to be nothing but a winner, IMO. Cutler will end up being fine in Chicago.

2007

JaMarcus Russell
Brady Quinn
Yuck

2008

Matt Ryan
Joe Flacco
I'd take either. Both are going to be NFL greats.

Here's my rankings

10. Smith
9. Campbell
8. Flacco

From best to worst with comments!!!
Ben Roethlisberger - 2 superbowls. Until this year has been consistent and has great pocket presence.
Eli Manning - Superbowl winner. Handles the NY media well. rose from what looked to be a possible bust label to win a great superbowl.
Philip Rivers - Consistent winner. no superbowl, but he looks to be in the kelly/marino mold until he wins where he gets credit for playing through pain and constantly getting the team to the playoffs despite bad early starts.
Aaron Rodgers - huge burden to carry as favre's successor. Plays well with a bad line. No real superstars on the offense, yet they are competitive in a cushy division. if he beats favre in the playoffs this year, he'll really find a groove of his own.
Matt Ryan - Falcons do better with him. He's a second year pro having to work through things, but he looks good.
Joe Flacco - gets help from a very balanced o and d, but he looks good from his work as a whole.
Vince Young - was everything everyone wanted, then totally sucked, and then shook off the knocks and raised himself up by the bootstraps. however, inconsistency is his problem. he needs to keep improving.
Jay Cutler - Kind of spiralling downward. but was very good early. perhaps he doesn't have enough tools in chicago. but the INTs at that number is very telling.
Alex Smith - Maybe alex smith and cutler are reversable. cutler keeps falling and alex smith is slowly rising. he is winning games and making good throws. If he keeps this pace, he'd be higher on the list.
Jason Campbell - still a starter on a bad redskins team. they seem to be finding a groove. he takes a beating each and every game. very inconsistent. Brady Quinn - on a pathetically run team. hasn't shown very much. a couple decent games here and there, but a lot of losses.
JP Losman - look at the guys ahead of him. a lot of them didn't have great situations, but found ways to get better. losman didn't do that. he's back from the UFL on the worst run team in football. If he sees the field again, there is no reason to believe he's learned anything. he'll continue to be a big armed qb with a small brain.
Matt Leinart - has no competitive drive at all. how many other first round qb's would let a 35+year old man keep him off the field for nearly 5 years? When he does see the field, there is a huge drop off in play.
JaMarcus Russell - I don't know crap about russell, i've never seen him play. but as a #1 pick, shouldn't he have some highlights that sportscenter, nfl network or cbs/fox/nbc could show? he'll be the new loco's QB in about 5 weeks.

That's my list. Personally I like Rodgers. I think too many people are focusing on this year rather then the entirety of the QBs career (i.e., Big Ben has an extraordinary amount of success throughout his career as a whole, but a stinker this year).

Lots of question marks after the top 4 if you ask me.

I can't believe you guys would put Rivers over Rodgers.

I know we don't get many San Diego games out here in the east but all Rivers does is throw screens.

He's also in, by far, the worst division in football.

Rodgers over Rivers every day of the week. He actually has an arm and can make downfield throws.

Listen, I know that Ben and Eli have Super Bowl rings. That's great, and its something that anybody arguing in favor of them will always have to say. But if we're basing this on their ability to play Quarterback in the NFL, you can't have them 1 and 2.

First off, Ben is on a 5 game losing streak including losses to KC and Cle. Great QB's don't lose those games, period.

Also, if we're basing it on pure QB play, Rodgers has to be #1. He's in a tougher division, he has the best arm of all of these guys, and he plays the QB position the way its supposed to be played.

Here's my list:

1. Aaron Rodgers
2. Eli Manning
3. Phillip Rivers
4. Ben Rapelisberger - Holds the ball way too long. Costs his team as much as he gets them. Also, their offensive coordinator is putting it in his hands too much.
5. Jay Cutler - Bad year, he'll bounce back.

6. Matt Ryan
7. Joe Flacco
8. Vince Young
9. Jason Campbell
10. Alex Smith
11. Matt Leinert
12. Brady Quinn
13. JP LossMan
14. JaSuckus Russell

so in other words you put a guy who's a 5 year pro who never never lead a team to the playoffs or been selected to a pro bowl and who gets sacked more often then Robo-sack ahead of a career 90 rated passer who won 2 superbowls and has started nearly every game since his rookie year, while leading his team to 4 playoffs 3 division championships and 3 AFC championship games. and who holds many of the Steelers records as well as over 10 NFL records for QBs (good records), even sharing some records with the great Payton Manning.

your logic knows no bounds.

anyone who puts Aaron Rodgers over Rivers, Manning or Roethlesburger is smoking some fine weed.

I rank Cutler much lower than many guys because he just kills teams with his turnovers. Same with Campbell at this point. Smith appears to have turned it around and is really looking like a legit NFL starting QB out there.

I think they're pretty close. Rodgers is a better downfield passer, but he holds onto the ball WAYYYYYYY too long.

so does Ben

I think the general consensus so far is that Russell, is by far the worst.

so does Ben

What are you talking about?

Juice was saying that Rodgers is better than Rivers. So I said that Rodgers holds onto the ball too long. I never said anything about Ben.

I ranked Eli much lower than anyone else did because of the same reason.

Eli and ball security are two words that don't go together.

*I think it is too early to put them in a ranking, they have had shorter careers, and therefore less time to screw up. I hate having Manning ranked lower than them with a SB ring.

I don't see how anyone can rank Leinart, Quinn or Russell higher than JP.

This post makes me want to argue in defense of the Steelers.

That's how you know it's a terrible post.

You can sign him if you want to give up a 1st round pick... he is an RFA and almost certainly will be tendered.I'm pretty sure you're mistaken. He's coming off his 5 year rookie contract... That does not constitute RFA status.

Campbell is not bad with ball security.
