    Schobel's 2010 salary is guaranteed

    I think he's gonna get his $6M if he plays or not. Maybe even his 2011 salary too!

    8/24/2007: Signed a seven-year, $50.5 million contract. The deal contains $21 million guaranteed, including Schobel's first four base salaries. 2009: $3.5 million, 2010: $6.025 million, 2011-2012: $6.5 million, 2013: $8.5 million, 2014: Free Agent

      Naw Draz, I think just the first 21 Million was guaranteed. The other figures are his yearly salaries. Seems they are failing to mention another 5 million somewhere, and I assume it is some other sort of bonus, roster bonus maybe.

        yeah.. only signing bonuses are guaranteed in NFL contracts.

          If he voluntarily retires, he would have to repay any unamortized guaranteed money, IIRC.

              If the Bills demand the money back, Schobel would have to repay it. Most times teams let it go, but that's usually because players retire with a million or so in unamortized bonus remaining. The $6M is a large chunk of change both out of Raph's pocket AND against the cap. And as a result, I don't see Schobel retiring.

                with 6 mm going to jauron for unused coaching, i imagine, ralph goes after the 6mm from schobel.

                for those claiming we'll get a 3rd round pick for him, i'd like to see you wire me $1MM. you see i'm a prince in nigeria and need to get the money out, but i need your bank account to make it happen.....

                  Contracts for coaches are normally guaranteed. The only guaranteed money in player contracts are the signing bonuses. There have been cases before where disputes with players have gone to litigation. When the bonus is big and there are a lot of years left on a deal, the odds go up that the team will want the amortized remainder back.

                      I'm just going by what rotoworld says... $21M guaranteed money includes the 1st 4 years salaries. The contract's inception was the '07 season... That means '07, '08, '09, AND '10 are guaranteed.

                      Taking it further and looking at clumps page... He lists amortized amount from bonuses to be $1.567M. Multiply that by the length of the contract and we get an $11M signing bonus. That leaves another $10M in guaranteed money on the table yet.

                      I also see that clump shows a $3.5M "other bonuses" for '10 in addition to his $3.5M salary.

                      Finally... His combined '11 through '13 salaries (less any unpublished yearly bonuses) is $21.5M. That falls short of the $29.5M remaining after guaranteed money ($50.5M - $21M guaranteed) by just $8M. assuming there are "other bonuses" in those 3 years, I can easily see that $8M consumed.

                      Conclusion... I believe his '10 salary and "other bonuses" are guaranteed. It comes down to what "guaranteed" means. More than likely it means it's his choice... He probably has a no cut clause through '10... If he wants the money, he has to show up at TC.

                            I don't think any of it is guaranteed if he retires. You are all forgetting about when Barry Sanders retired? He had to repay 1/6 of his signing bonus.

                            Sanders Repays Part of Signing Bonus

                            DETROIT (AP) -- Barry Sanders has repaid the Detroit Lions $83,333, the balance of his prorated 1999 signing bonus, his agent said Wednesday.

                            Sanders received an $11 million signing bonus when he signed a six-year contract in 1997. He played two years before startling the NFL by leaving football on the eve of last summer's training camp, just 1,458 yards shy of breaking Walter Payton's NFL career record of 16,726.

                            Arbitrator Sam Kagel ruled Feb. 15 that Sanders must repay one-sixth of the bonus for each year he fails to play under terms of the 1997 contract, or $1.833 million per year.
