    The cuts won't be coming

There will be no rush to sign just-released veterans this June because there will be no rush to release veterans this June. Sure, there will be a handful of recognizable names on the June 1 waiver list — with Denver's Brian Griese and San Francisco's J.J. Stokes among them — but there won't be more than a handful.
And here's why: Clubs don't have to clear cap room by cutting substantial salaries.

In fact, a check of this week's numbers reveals that only Indianapolis ($51,000) and Tampa Bay ($316,900) are less than $500,000 under the salary cap, while five teams — Arizona ($16 million), Minnesota ($13.1), Philadelphia ($12.4), Houston ($10.5) and New Orleans ($10.1) — are at least $10 million below the $75.007 million figure.

But here's more revealing evidence: Of the league's 32 teams, all are under the cap. Six are less than $1 million under it; nine are more than $5 million beneath it. I think you get the picture: Fiscal responsibility is in.

"It's a situation this year where teams are in much better shape than they've been in years past," said Carolina general manager Marty Hurney. "Teams have planned better, and, consequently, are in better shape with the cap which means fewer cuts."
