    A case for Mike Martz

I certainly like him better than Weiss if nothing else.

Martz was the head coach in St. Louis for five seasons (2000-01) and only had one losing season. He coached the Rams to a NFC championship in 2001 before losing to New England in the Super Bowl. Even before becoming head coach in St. Louis, he was the offensive coordinator of what became the “greatest show on turf.”

Things got ugly with Martz and the Rams in 2005. After a 2-3 start to the season Martz took a medical leave to care for a bacterial infection in his heart. During that time he developed a lot of conflict with the front office. It ultimately led to his firing at the end of the season.

In 2006 he interviewed for head coaching jobs in Oakland and New Orleans. Reportedly the money wasn’t right in Oakland and Martz ended up signing on with Detroit as their offensive coordinator. During his first season there he helped Detroit rise to seventh best offense in the NFL and journeyman quarterback Jon Kitna threw for over 4,000 yards at age 34.

Nope - in Buffalo you need a guy who runs the ball, not passes it as the first option

Martz's offense can work anywhere with the right personnel.

Having said that, It was a case for him.. There are many other coaches I'd rather see here on a PERSONAL basis.

Agreed. He wasn't even that great of a head coach. He just had a ton of talent on his team that made his scheme work.

Well you can also say that Shanahan doesnt win **** without Elway and Terrell Davis and the rest of that ridicilously talented Denver team.

But let me make this clear. Personally, i DONT want Martz.. I'm just beginning a series of posts, making a case for each potential coach.

Seems to me Martz implemented an offense that worked best for his personal and environment. It happened to be one of the most successful offense in league history. Who says he couldn't tweak it for our climate or our talent?

I would take Martz way before Weiss as a HC

however he is a very pass happy Coach and although we could handle a pass heavy O for about 70% of our games that 30% of Buffalo weather or winter games we play in our division would be counter productive ot a pass reliant attack...

That would remain to be seen, and what they could deduce in an interview, but he has been in a few places and he has proven to almost live and die by the pass attack

Very well written article Pat. Although most of us, including you, don't have Martz on the top of our list, I'll put my optimisim cap on for a second and say....

                          "We could do worse."

I have zero interest in Martz. In fact, I have such little interest in him that it almost makes me want Weiss to be the coach.

if u bring in Martz u have to bring in a strong Defensive cordinator as well
would love a Weis Cronnel combo or Martz haselett

                              we need to do something
