    Moving up to first class

49ers rookie safety hopes to make leap from Arena ball
San Diego -- It will all be worth it if 49ers safety Dwaine Carpenter plays well tonight and makes the team -- the moonlighting at a fast-food restaurant, the practicing in smothering heat.

Carpenter is dangling at the bottom of the 49ers' roster and will get a final chance to audition in tonight's exhibition finale against the Chargers.

The 49ers will release 12 players by Sunday to get down to the 53-man roster limit. Carpenter is contending for a spot as backup safety with veterans John Keith and Ronnie Heard.

Carpenter, Ledford, Bruce squeeze out vets

Call the North Carolina home of safety Dwaine Carpenter and all you hear are shouts of jubilation from his 4-year-old son, Jaelin.

Talk to offensive lineman Dwayne Ledford and listen to the mixture of relief and satisfaction for making the team.

Sunday, on the most bittersweet day on the NFL calendar, the 49ers released a dozen players to get down to the 53-man roster limit.

It touched off celebrations for Carpenter, Ledford and wide receiver Arland Bruce III, who all emerged from pro football backwaters to make it to the big- time.
