    Billboard/Charity News

I explored the We Want Bill Cowher billboard idea, and it’s not going to happen. I called Lamar Advertising and the earliest date we’d be able to get it up in a visible location (like the Jauron billboard) is January 11th. That’s too late, there is a good chance a full week after the season it may be too late, and potentially be a waste.

So my thinking and I’d like your opinion on this as well—is to take out a large display ad in the Buffalo News. If I submit it by Monday it could run mid-week. It would say something to the effect, on behalf of Bills fans, in no uncertain terms that we want Bill Cowher, and a plea to make it happen (Ralph).

Then to tie it potentially into something charitable, I figure that any extra money donated than what the ad will cost, will be donated directly the Western New York Make-A-Wish Foundation. I don’t care if it’s 25 cents or 25 million, that’s a solid cause, and would be “on behalf of Buffalo Bills fans everywhere.”

In the event that not enough money was raised for the ad (which I know wouldn’t be the case going by the reaction I’ve gotten), too much money, or something weird happened before we put out the display ad (like say Cowher taking another job)--- then every single penny would go to the Make A Wish.

Best case—We get a message across to show everyone how passionate Bills fans are, and there’s possibly a little left for charity. Worst case--- the Make A Wish foundation gets a nice charity gift from Bills fans. I consider it win, win and a good deed.

If we do this, I will have a running total post going on Buffalo Sports Daily with the amount received and at the time of presenting a potential check to the charity, will get a nice big white check and have from “Buffalo Bills fans”.

What do you think? Insight needed now since if this is something we’re to do, it has to commence quickly.

    Thanks.

Waiting for the call back from Mark from the Buffalo news right now to get specific ad sizes and rates.

Someone suggested having a charity drive and donating money to the charity on behalf of "Bills fans for Bill Cowher' and said that would pick up a lot of positive publicity and press.

Absoultely. That is a great thing to do and it will get coverage. Let me know if you need any help in doing it.

Im working on finalizing the channels. Even when you do a good thing like a charity drive, there are certain guidelines that have to be in place.

hoping to wrap this up shortly!

You should do an ad in the paper wherever Cowher lives too, let him know the people of Buffalo want him.

Newspaper ads are crazy expensive. I doubt we can donate enough to get TBN ad. And having 2 ads, let's just say it's in the same boat as Cowher actually coming here...

They are expensive, I know, I've worked in the industry. 2 ads is out of the question. 1 is not.

I know that a week-long billboard will run $1395, but the issue is the earliest it could get errected is January 4th, and that could be too late.

That would be the Raleigh News & Observer... If somebody gets serious about doing one there too, let me know if I can be of assistance.

I agree, I'm not set on it yet ,but I think a straight charity drive with the gift coming via "Bills fans for Bill Cowher" is an oustanding idea.

Again, I'm just waiting for the proper channels to be in place. Even with charities, you can't just openly run a fundraiser or charitable event without guidelines by the benefactor being in place.

My goal, and I think it will happen, is to have everything set up by tomorrow morning.

Its more of a question of HOW we want to proceed. The Billboard idea is out, Jan 11th is too far away, thats the only thing we know for sure right now.

Pat also let me know the specifics once they are done. I have an article due tonight about the press conferences today, so I want to add that in at the end with all the specifics.

I'd guess it'd be like 10 times that for a full page ad. I had to do small ads for my employer couple years ago at the D@C and we had small ads and they ran way more then the billboard cost of $1395.
