View Full Version : Bowl Records and Discussion

I'm surprised people haven't been on here more regarding the bowl games. I know we've got a lot of college fans on here, and I know the Bills are sucking it up. College football has been my saving grace lately, as I've got very little interest in NFL anymore.

So I figured with all the heated discussions before the bowl games about conferences, we'd keep a regular tally of the bowl game records for each conference. I'll try to edit it as regularly as possible, but I'll be travelling tomorrow so I'll be on late if at all.

So far, in order by win percentage:

MWC 4-0 (1.000)
Big East 4-2 (0.667)
Big Ten 3-2 (0.600)
SEC 5-4 (0.556)
Big 12 3-3 (0.500)
ACC 3-3 (0.500)
Pac-10 2-5 (0.286)

Games left:
MWC (1)
Big Ten (2)
Big 12 (1)
SEC (1)
ACC (1)
Big East (1)
Pac-10 (0)

I'll try and do a more thorough breakdown in a couple days (need to get some sleep), with lists of which teams each conference has beaten, and each conference's record vs. the other major conferences, etc. And yes, I included the MWC because at this point it appears that they deserve a BCS bowl bid over...well, most every conference out there. They might not be as great top to bottom as most, but the top is dang good and has been for several years.

yep. the MWC has been dominant this year. with 3 teams in the top 25, probably the 2nd strongest team in the country in TCU then BYU (win), Utah (win), Air Force (win) and Wyoming (win) all winning their bowl games, this is a pretty good conference and probably should have the Big East's automatic bowl (a conference that absolutely does not deserve their auto bid as Cinci's complete destruction at the hands of Florida should prove).

I love Bowl season and the MWC needs more exposure.

In addition to watching several live, I've recorded several more on the DVR and watched them. So many games have been fantastic.

More good ones today. Can't wait.

It has been a pretty good Bowl season as you may say.
last nite shows there needs to be a playoff and something quick.
Last nite was embarassing for CINCI and they don't belong in a game like that....
I would have rather seen Wisconsin in the game VS Florida.

Credit to the Big 10 they have showed up and played this year.
That win by Ohio St will help the Big 10 get back to where they use to be....

Pac 10 has been awful this bowl season, now everyone will ownder if that conference was overrated all year. Well they would have a good point to say the least.

It has been nice seeing the mid West conference teams......

Seriously. If TCU shows well against Boise State, they'll have a very good argument for being the NC.

Numbers are updated up to during the ECU/Arkansas game. Should have everything right, but I did it quickly so correct me if they're wrong. I'll work on the breakdown more tonight after unpacking, or maybe I'll just add some commentary.

It has been a good bowl season. LOTS of really good matchups and games. Nice job by Florida to beat down Cincy.

Updated after Arkansas' win. Man, that's two SEC teams that have benefitted from kickers missing 3 FG's (Auburn, Arkansas). Seems to me that SEC's solid kicking has won it more games than its speed so far.

I hate this Mountain West argument.

Wyoming beat Fresno State, who went 8-4 in the pathetic WAC. Not a big win.

BYU beat a pretty good Oregon State team but also lost handily to Florida State (by 30).

Utah beat Cal, the 6th place team in the Pac-10. Hardly a great accomplishment.

Air Force beat up on Houston, the class of Conference USA. Again, nothing to write home about. That's like beating a MAC or WAC team.

So, to me, the MWC top 5 teams are better than the Pac-10 middle conference teams, and is better than the WAC. Play some Big 10, Big East, Big 12 or SEC teams Mountain West and see how you do.

Let's see what happens:

Wyoming: Loss to Texas and Colorado (3-9).

Utah: Loss to Oregon, win against Louisville (worst team in Big East) and Cal.

BYU: Loss Florida State, Win Oklahoma and Oregon State

Air Force: Loss Minnesota (6-7) and Navy.

TCU: Win Virginia (3-9) and Clemson (9-5). They did not big a ranked team from a BCS conference.

The only serious wins I see from any of those teams are BYU against Oklahoma and Oregon State, although both of those teams finished middle of the road in their conferences. And TCU beating Clemson.

I'd like to see more Big East/MWC games. I don't think they will be close. I know Cinci did awful in the Sugar Bowl but they had some serious turmoil with their HC leaving and the interim coach leaving right after the game. Besides, I'd like to see any other conference champion (besides Texas) try to compete with Florida. It just wouldn't happen.

It is so hard to judge conferences....
You can say the SEC has had a bad bowl season and they have the 2 best team sin the nation in BAMA and FLORIDA.

PAC 10 yes they have had a bad bowl season.
It all goes down to what team is ready to play bottom line.....

USC will be back next year. They were replacing much of their defense that went to the NFL and started a freshmen qb. 'SC won't be down for long.

Well, for some reason the "Edit/Delete" button isn't showing up. So I'll just try it this way. Guess it doesn't hurt that it helps bump my thread

Updated thus far, along with records vs. each conference up to this point. I'll try to break down wins/losses along with record differential (i.e. if a 6-6 team plays an 8-4 team, that's a +2 differential).

EDIT: Seems strange that I can edit this post, but not the OP. Oh well, records are updated after TCU went down.

TCU especially stung for me, I had them teased down to -1 with Florida already in. So it goes.
And if either of those teams played in one of the bigger conferences, yes even the Big 10, they each lose at least three games.
Dalton would have about 20 interceptions in the SEC.
I really wish they would have let one of these teams play Florida.

that was a stunner for me. especially how bad Boise was looking this year against any team with a modicum of offense.

but you just can't downplay how clutch that team is. I would have liked to see them both against Texas or Florida or Alabama.

Again, won't let me edit. Updated after Iowa's win.

I was figuring Iowa would pull it out, considering what a great front 7 they have. Ga Tech's offense is dang good, but Iowa just has too many guys that disrupt the run game and too good of a secondary to be passed on. Iowa's offense in the first half surprised me a little. They looked pretty good.
