There is only one thing Chris Kelsay can do this afternoon when the Bills close out yet another disappointing, unfulfilling, mind-numbingly aggravating season against the Indianapolis Colts at sold-out Ralph Wilsonhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20100103/SPORTS03/1030343/1021/Buffalo-Bills-playing-for-jobs-in-finale#) Stadium."You have to go out and put your best work on film and continue to play hard," the veteran defensive endhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20100103/SPORTS03/1030343/1021/Buffalo-Bills-playing-for-jobs-in-finale#) said.
Working hard and giving full effort is never an issue for Kelsay; he does that week after week, and has ever since he came into the NFL in 2003.
If his teammates were wise, they would do the same thing today. Big changes already have begun to take shape in the Buffalo organization with the promotion of Buddy Nix to general manager of football operations, and you can be sure Nix and the coach he hires will, in the coming months, perform a sizeable overhaul of the roster.
"I think we've approached it like that every week," said another 100-percent-all-the-time-guy, running back Fred Jackson. "We have to go out here and audition every week. It's not promised that we're going to be here."
In the NFL, that's the case in most places. Pro football is a performance-based occupation and if you don't play well, there's no room for you on the roster. Given the way the 5-10 Bills have played this year, there could be a whole lot of roster spots opening up.
"There's a lot of uncertainty and I don't think anybody knows what's going to happen," said Kelsay. "I think everybody is playing for their jobs so you have to ... build your resume."
Nothing to play for? Sure, the Bills are out of the playoff picture for the 10th year in a row, but there is nothing meaningless about today's game for them.
