    Jaguars can pursue Stokes

The San Francisco 49ers cleared the way for the Jaguars to pursue J.J. Stokes yesterday by releasing the veteran wide receiver.

Stokes, the 10th overall pick in 1995, was cut so the 49ers could save $2.25 million against this year's salary cap. The Jaguars need a No. 2 wide receiver opposite Jimmy Smith.

Signing the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Stokes would reunite him with Jaguars wide receivers coach Larry Kirksey, who was Stokes' position coach for five seasons in San Francisco. The Detroit Lions and New York Jets also reportedly are interested in Stokes.
