As had been expected since the end of last season, the Chiefs released reserve cornerback Ray Crockett on Tuesday and trimmed $3 million off their salary cap.

That was the amount of Crockett's 2003 salary. The Chiefs saved an additional $1.25 million by waiting until June to dump him. That amount will count against the Chiefs' 2004 salary cap.

The Chiefs will free $1 million more with the imminent retirement of linebacker Marvcus Patton. The two roster moves give the Chiefs ample cap room to sign their draft picks, including top choice Larry Johnson, a running back from Penn State.

The Chiefs' intentions for Crockett became obvious shortly after the end of the 2002 season. They identified cornerback as a position of need and signed Dexter McCleon shortly after the start of free-agency.
