    Allen Wilson chat tidbit...

Haven't posted in a long while, but some of you may remember me, so I'll get back into it here. But anyway, getting back to the post, some interesting info in Allen Wilson's chat today regarding Modrak for all who want to see him gone. Guy I won't defend one bit as he has no business in an NFL front office, but if you want to see something that may be the most frustrating thing we've read in a while check this out:

    12:06 [Comment From Erik Erik : ]
Is anything actually going to "change" with Buddy Nix as GM? We still have Modrak and John Guy on staff, who are responsible for Langston Walker, Dockery, Whitner over Ngata, Marshawn Lynch, etc...

    Monday January 11, 2010 12:06 Erik
12:08 First of all, we don't know if Modrak and Guy are returing (Guy's contract is up in May). Also, Guy brought in Walker and Dockery because that's who the team wanted. And Guy certainly didn't make the Bills give those guys those huge contracts. The drafts were as much an organizational call as they were Modrak's. It should be noted though that he wanted Brian Cushing over Aaron Maybin.

No one really knows what transpired with Modrak but he's getting the blame even though it isn't clear who makes the final decision other than what Chris Borwn said that Dick did.

Modrak is the head scout, he can only recommend who should be drafted but in the end, I don't think he has a say on who the bills pick.

Ugh. I don't care who is running this team next year. Just make good decisions and win games. Period.

Wasn't Dick Jauron given final say on all personnel moves?

Agreed. If Modrak made recommendations that were better and someone overruled them, that's what we need to find out. How glaring!

not during his entire tenure here (blame Levy, Modrak, Guy, Jauron etc) for 2006-08 drafts and personnel)

But in 2009, yes.. Every person on that 53 man roster was pretty much signed off on by Jauron

This is why it seriously irks me when I hear that people want to get rid of Modrak. The guy has been successful for the longest time when it comes to finding talent in the NFL but when he comes here and doesn't produce it's automatically his fault.

If the rest of OBD stays out of Modrak and Nix's way, we may be able to actually turn this franchise around.

                        Re: Allen Wilson chat tidbit...

I wonder how much Modrak had to do with actually selecting compared to making recommendations...I am around the Philly area, and I lived around the Philly area especially when Modrak was with the Eagles, and he had good, solid drafts with Philly. Some of his better picks:

                        1998:

1-Tra Thomas: A solid Left Tackle during his tenure with Philly. (11th Pick)
3-Jeremiah Trotter: Pretty good Inside Backer on his best days in this league. (72nd Pick)
3-Allen Rossum: A decent corner for a 3rd round pick and a very good return specialist throughout his career. (85th pick)
5-Ike Reese: A guy who was a very good special teamer and eventually was able to step in and contribute on defense. Not bad for a 5th Rounder. (142nd pick)

                        1999:

1-Donovan McNabb: Duh, kind of shaped the success of the franchise for the past 10 years. (2nd pick)
4-John Welbourn: Was a decent olineman, who was versatile and started for the Eagles and Chiefs at Guard and Tackle. (97th pick)

                        2000:

1-Corey Simon: Was a very good ballplayer while in Philly until negotiations broke down after they put the franchise tag on him. Injuries killed his career post-Philly. (6th pick)
3-Bobbie Williams: Productive lineman in Philly and was a part of the very good Bengals team in 05 which got screwed by Palmer's injury in the playoffs. A good NFL lineman. (61st pick)

                        2001:

3-Derrick Burgess: 2 time pro bowler and 1 time 2nd team all-pro taken in the 3rd round. (61st pick)
4-Correll Buckhalter: Productive back coming out of Nebraska's option offense. Has been able to be a player whereever he's been, just hasn't been the guy anywhere yet. (121st pick)
6-A.J. Feeley: Anytime you can get a QB who can play a little and win some games in the 6th round that's a good deal. Brady after all was a 6th rounder. (155th pick)

Yeah there are plenty of misses in there, but guys like Tra Thomas, Donovan McNabb, Jeremiah Trotter, Corey Simon and others are the backbone of your teams, and he hit on some big time picks. I wonder how much input he really had in Buffalo.

Alot of people want him gone because he's had his fingerprints on a lot of picks here since 2001

Apparently Modrak wanted Cushing over Maybin

According to Allen Wilson, in a live chat this afternoon, Modrak wanted to draft Cushing rather than Maybin.
Wouldn't have been my personal choice (I almost certainly would have taken Oher there), but it does show that the actual decision making on the draft, hasn't really been part of what Modrak does. I think Nix will keep him, because he is good at what he does, which is evaluate college prospects. It hasn't been Modrak's fault that the 'powers that be' (mostly Jauron), haven't listened to him hard enough over the last few years.
Even at this early stage, we might be looking at one of the best drafts ever, if we had gone, Cushing, Wood, Byrd, Levitre and Nelson.

                              Here's a link to the chat http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboa...ve-chat-1.html
Be warned, it's a fair way into it somewhere.
