Urlacher highest paid player in franchise history

While the blockbuster nine-year contract signed by Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher earlier this week falls short of some estimates that placed its value as high as $72 million, the deal is nonetheless among the most lucrative ever awarded a defensive player, ESPN.com has confirmed through NFL Players Association documents.

The contract totals $56.655 million, and includes a $13 million signing bonus, not the $18 million in upfront money suggested in some reports. It does not have any "voidable" years. Of course, since the salary cap charges for each season of the contract exceed $5 million, and top out at $7.4 million in 2011, it is reasonable to assume the Bears will eventually be forced to restructure the contract

Bears show wisdom in Urlacher's new deal

We're so accustomed to players changing teams this time of year. It's actually newsworthy when one is put in a position to stay with the same club for the rest of his career.

It is particularly newsworthy when that player is Brian Urlacher.

The Chicago Bears made a wise move in signing Urlacher to a nine-year contract. It took an enormous investment of cash, including the many millions of dollars they are paying in signing bonus. It took an even larger investment of faith that the Pro Bowl linebacker who has led them in tackles the past three years has plenty of seasons of off-the-charts playmaking and production in front of him

            Urlacher perfect as Chicago hero

Chicago is the city of big shoulder pads.

Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary and the late, great Walter Payton all are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Each spent his entire career with the Chicago Bears.

It's linebacker Brian Urlacher's turn to join that illustrious club.

Skybox increases value of Urlacher's contract

CHICAGO - The reason for the discrepancy in reports over the worth of Brian Urlacher's new contract is the inclusion of a luxury suite in Soldier Field so his friends and family can watch him play in comfort for the next nine years.

While the NFL Players Association recognizes the contract at $56.6 million, the cost of the skybox over the nine years is estimated at $1 million or more, depending on rising costs. That's why Urlacher's agent, Steven Kauffman, calls the contract worth closer to $58 million.

What makes the package good for Urlacher is its $23 million value over the first three years. It is not a back-loaded deal that provides an unrealistic, inflated total that nobody expects to see paid.
