Bills looking for an offensive specialist as next coach

Posted by Mike Florio on January 14, 2010 2:23 PM ET

The Buffalo Bills are taking their time in rounding up candidates for the team's vacant head-coaching job. And despite indications that Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is the clubhouse leader, a league source tells us that the Bills currently intend to hire a coach who specializes in the offensive side of the ball.

It's prompting speculation that the Bills already have in mind a guy whose current team is still playing. The Bill are planning to interview Cardinals offensive line coach Russ Grimm, and they were rebuffed in their efforts to pursue Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Another possibility is Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. However, the Bills have not yet attempted to interview him.

The news also suggests that the pursuit of Bill Cowher has concluded. (Then again, until the Bills or Cowher make it clear that Cowher is out of the running, we're inclined to think the door might be still open.)

Either way, it's a bad sign for former Ravens coach Brian Billick. He has the offensive background, and he's immediately available. The fact that he hasn't already been hired suggests that he probably won't be.

Meanwhile, time is of the essence. Assistant coaches need to be hired, and plans need to be made for free agency and the draft. The Senior Bowl practice sessions, for example, get rolling in less than two weeks. So unless the Bills are waiting to hire someone who is still coaching, they are wasting extremely valuable time.

    Wow..

Florio don't mess around when he cites league sources either, trust me.

          .
His offenses weren't that good in Baltimore... his D's however were very good

I think I would be more intersted in Grimm then Billick, so this is not upsetting to me besides the fact they refuse to interview him...

So what does this do to T-Longs Source?

I think if your source isnt the Bills front office, then your source doesnt know S***

So many people's "sources" contradict each other

(this is a general comment and not directed at you T-Long)

If this is true, Frazier won't be hired.

Just because they want something doesn't mean their going to get it. Fact is, there is not many offensive minds left. Garnett in Dallas but i would think he would reject us as he's i think the highest paid O.C. in the league.

The list of people is very slim. Unless of course, they get desperate and call Mike Martz. Although, if they havn't already, i doubt they still would.

Is there a reason that we never hear Mike Heimerdinger's name come up? I'm sure there must be, I'm just not aware of what would disqualify him from such a position.

As far as I know the BIlls have shown no interest in Billick or Martz.

They're definitely interested in Grimm, that much I know. .and I've heard reports about Garrett, which I know nothing about.

Another name to not write off, and I know you guys will hate this, is Cam Cameron

Again, anyone with a brain should put this assumption out there. Neither party has said cut and dry no, so it isn't no yet.

                        1-15 Cam Cameron. lol

When Nix was hired, i actually posted i bet Cameron becomes the HC. The 1-15 Fish were not his fault, he got a bad deal there. That whole team was a mess. He will get another chance somewhere. In Buffalo, it would be a very tough sell.

Well there it is, straight from the horses mouth. At least Les will bring in an ubber experienced coordinator in Saunders though I worry bout the o line coach.

If they hire Frazier, they will need to pump a lot of money towards Frazier to build his staff. He will need to go out and find the right guys for O-Line, QB and O.C. jobs. Our offense is pathetic and needs a lot of work. Frazier can bring in his own peeps to run the defense because he can over see it, but the offensive side of the ball needs to be people who been there before. Like a Chris Palmer for example, or a Al Saunders, although i am not high on him.

Frazier or Grimm, or whoever else they hire, could be the next Belichicks but if they don't hire the right personnel for offense, then they will be massive failures in Buffalo.
