Adams lands "new' job

Former NHL forward and Stanley Cup winner Kevyn Adams has been hired by the Sabres to work in the hockey department. The Sabres were trying to figure out the best way to use him before outlining his job description, but he has been working with Lindy Ruff and Darcy Regier.

"I don't know where we are on our quota of Buffalonians, but we have a lot of them upstairs," Regier said with a laugh. "And they seem to stick up for each other."

Adams, who was raised in Clarence and for years spent the offseason in the Chautauqua Lake area, was hired shortly after Christmas. He considered getting into coaching after playing his final season with the Blackhawks and now appears to be finding his way in the coaching- management side of the game.

Exactly what he's doing appears to be top secret. Adams declined to comment on his duties because he was still trying to get comfortable with his role and the organization. Regier suggested Adams was part of an experiment but refused to offer details.

"It's a position we haven't defined," Regier said. "It's a work in progress. It involves being a little different. Hopefully, it's creative and a little innovative. It's not rocket science because we're dealing with hockey. We'll define it, and it's subject to change."

A veteran presence who just doesn't have to lace 'em up. Assistant coach ala James Patrick, perhaps?
