If you're a homer to the extent you're looking to justify it as a solid hire, please put your links, and thoughts in this thread.

I"ll start. Bill Cowher recommended him to Pittsburgh in 2007

He fit the age group they were looking for....

he fits what Nix was looking for, an offensive coach, HC experience, out of work and hard up for a job, wasn't going to say no. I did hear that it was Cowher who recommended him to Russ and Nix.

Has WON every team he has gone to and has plenty of connections

Run first offensive style as well, which we need

At the PC, the media better not let them spin. They better batter them with questions about why every single candidate wasn't interested -- do not take anything less than a real answer. When they get the spin answer, ask again in a different way.

I'm a Yankee fan. George Steinbrenner knew when to walk away and hand over control of his team. Ralph is going to go out kicking and screaming though.

but, to answer your question, they'll say that Chan meets every requirement they had when they set out to find a coach. They'll also say that he was excited to come to Buffalo and turn this franchise around.

Chan Gailey is a good coaches name like Marv Levy.

* Gailey's first job in the NFL as an offensive coordinator came in 1989-1990 with the Denver Broncos. Denver made the Superbowl in both of those years.

* From 1994-97, Gailey worked with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was an offensive aide through those seasons, all of which the Steelers won their division. He was the offensive coordinator there from 1996-1997.

* After coaching the Cowboys, he took the job as offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins from 2000-2001. Miami went 11-5 in both of those seasons.

The guy does have plenty of experience, and hopefully will be able to put together a solid coaching staff. The dude probably knows everyone that's been associated with the NFL for the past 40 years.

Bill Cowher wanted him as Offensive Coordinator if he returned to coaching this year.

I have said this before, i'll say it again. Often times it is not the head coach, its the staff they put together.

Chan Gailey has experience, made connections, knows people.

I just hope that transitions into him bringing in a pair of good coordinators.

No one can say Russ Brandon made the hire or that this had anything to do with marketing or ticket sales.

This move good or bad will all be on Buddy.

When he starts to suck, his name is easy to make fun of; Gailey. Haha, gonna be a fun offseason next year

100% true...this is the exact hire they were looking to make from day 1...realistically

Actually they went 5-11 in 1990.
But that doesn't change the fact that as a coach or coordinator, a vast majority of his seasons were winning. Unlike Jauron.

What type of defense does he run?

The 0-16. It's a version of the 3-4 where you drop the FS in the box, roll up your corners and lose every game.

This is similar to the Norv Turner hire in San Deigo and now look at Norv. Problem is that we dont have Rivers. Hell we dont have a top 45 qb.

I know almost nothing about him except the name. I know I've heard it. Virtually everything is second hand. He's had some success. I guess he's known as something of a "yes man." At least in Dallas he let Jerry Jones order him around. If he's the guy, we'll see what happens. I hope that if he's hired, Ralph Wilson keeps his nose out of football operations and trust Nix and Gailey to run things. I don't know if he's any good, but I know when Ralph meddles it never turns out for the good.

Dujek
01-18-2010, 05:09 PM
I'm not going to spin it, I'm just going to lay out the facts:

He knows how to win football games.
He knows how to play hard nosed, grind it out offensive football.
He also knows how to light it up if that's required.

Alright so he's not Cowher, Billick, Gruden or Schotty, but he IS a coach with a proven track record at not sucking.

I'm guessing on Defense it will be Campo. Offense i have no idea, maybe Al Saunders?

* None of his teams went below .500 and most of his teams won 10+ games
* His teams usually hovered around the top 15
* His teams have been very successful in the playoffs

That's all I got at this point. :hang:

The moment he's hired he becomes the best coach that this team has had since Wade Phillips. I'm comfortable that he could do a competent job.

I think the fanbase is just bummed because we don't see a lot of "high upside" in this guy. If he was a coaching stud, it would have been apparent by now - either in the pros or college. He just seems like a guy that won't lose you games. Give him enough talent and he can get you to the playoffs, but can he elevate the play of a mediocre team? I'm not too confident about that.

I think the fan base is bummed because our owner, GM and HC have the life expectancy of a fly.
