Cross him off as potential Bills DC. Mike Florio of ProFootballtalk.com reports he's the new LB coach in Baltimore.

Guys would rather be LB coaches at another team than Buffalo. Sad

Having said that, I think the underlying message is what I've been saying for the past several days.. Despite Gailey's press conference statement, I am strongly believing they are not going to switch to a 3-4

Maybe this means we never had any interest in him...

Either way, I find it odd that he took an LB coaching job over the Denver DC job.

maybe it means he's older. has health issues and he wants less responsibility.

Was there a report that we offered him a deal or even talked to him?

I wrote this early this morning. While I cannot say the Bills are going to hire Bates for sure, I was told over the weekend that as of Saturday he remained the Bills leading candidate-- and not landing Pees I think lands credence to us not going to a 3-4 this season. Of course Pees isn't the only 3-4 oriented coach in the world so we'll have to see. But

I’m told that Jim Bates is still the leading candidate for the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator job. Despite Chan Gailey’s statement at his introductory press conference saying he’s open to running a 3-4, I don’t expect them to convert to that scheme.

The reality is the Bills would need more than one year to get the personnel necessary to effectively run the defense. A more realistic scenario would be installing a more bulked up 4-3 defense. Regardless if it’s Bates or someone else, I’d be surprised if the Bills switched this year.

We’ll be taking a long look this week at the type of transformation and personnel the Bills would need to effectively install the 3-4.

We did have interest in him.. Trust me. If an actual offered was made, I do not know.

Ill take that as good enough info then.

I dont mind sticking with the 4-3 as long as is run as a base 4-3, which involveds blitzing.

I think it's pretty damning on Bates' part that we haven't hired him yet. He's obviously the most likely guy for various reasons, but despite that it's taking a while. I think he's viewed as the best of a bad bunch, rather than "amg go get him!" defensive coordinator.

That's not the same guy that told you about Frazier, is it ?

Jim Bates doesn't believe in blitzing.

So... what you're saying is, it's probably not Bates who is coming here! Thanks Pat.

4-12 next season at best
Gailey has a 6-10 season after that and then gets canned.

We will be back to where we are now in 2 years from now.
