RUMOR: Giff Smith to coach OLBs

This is from a Georgia Tech messageboard and the fans sound pissed to be losing him.

Best of luck to Giff Smith...

Giff has accepted a position on Chan's staff in Buffalo. He will be the new Outside Linebackers coach fo the Bills. He signed a 2 year contract. Giff have been great for GT and I wish him nothing but the best. He was a great recruiting coordinator and D line coach for us and one day I think he will make a great head coach.
    Best of luck Giff.

4-3 DE to coach OLBs...sounds like a 3-4 to me. If it is Fangio though, why would we hire Gailey's old friend. Wouldn't Fangio want his own people?

So Gailey is just going to recreate his GT staff in the NFL?

Better yet, why are we taking so long to hire a DC and apparently hiring a LB coach before him, or do we already have our DC.

I'm betting we already have our DC. Hell, I bet we already have most of our staff. I wouldn't be surprised if Gailey is putting it together and just wants to announce it all at once....

You'd think so. However, this is the Bills we're talking about. Nothing would shock me.

If Gailey wanted some college coaches, it would make sense to wait until after signing day. Giff is GT's recruiting coordinator and I doubt they want this sort of info leaked prior to signing day.

From what it sounds...I wouldn't be surprised if we switched or if we stayed in the 4-3.

You guys are ignoring his coaching bio: he started out coaching WR's, then secondary, then DL. It seems pretty obvious that he's fairly flexible. I doubt a move to coaching LB's holds that much meaning.

It could also mean that they've got someone else to coach the DL (ahem, Bob Sanders please).

He did LB and DL, just adding gas to fire but 3-4? LBs are basically DEs in that formation

Yes but most 4-3 teams do not have both an outside and inside linebacker coach.
