Gailey hires five for staff; retains two

It took about a week and a half, but Bills new head coach Chan Gailey made significant progress in assembling his coaching staff. The team announced five of his new hirings Wednesday along with a pair of assistants from the previous staff.
Curtis Modkins has been hired as the team’s offensive coordinator/running backs coach, Bob Bicknell as tight ends coach, Joe D’Alessandris as offensive line coach, Kevin Patullo as offensive quality control and Giff Smith as defensive assistant.

Gailey also elected to keep two of the most veteran assistants from the Bills previous coaching staff as George Catavolos will remain as secondary coach and Bob Sanders will also continue to serve on the defensive side of the ball.

GREAT move keeping Sanders and Catavolos.

Don't know the others... but at least we're doing something right?

Thank goodness they kept Bob Sanders. He got a lot out of our DL, particularly the pass rush.

Now on to looking up the other names...

Ive never heard of any of those assistants.

Anyway, Sanders return is interesting. Has he worked with a 3-4 DL unit before? This could be telling?

Joe D did a bad job in 2010 but on the flip side did a heck of a job in 2009. Solid hire, Bicknell is good and love that Sanders, Cavatolos are back.

“Ultimately, we want to make sure we get the right guys; great teachers, great communicators and the right kind of people for the Bills," Gailey said. "These coaches give us a great start in that direction.”

                  BTW..

This gives even more credence to what I've been saying for 48 hours now-- The bills already have their guy for DC.

Not even the Bills would go hire a DL coach, LB coach and DB coach without having a coordinator in place who wants to work with them.

or would they? This is the Bills we're talking about.

Bob Bicknell: formerly TE coach of the Chiefs (07-09), before that he was OL coach in college (Temple) and the European League

Joe D’Alessandris: formerly OL coach of the Chiefs

Kevin Patullo: formerly offensive quality control for the Chiefs

Seriously? This is what we've come to? Good thing we snapped up all those KC castoffs before anyone else got to them.

Pretty much KC Offensive staff in 2008, and one LB coach from GA Tech.

I will say keeping Bob Sanders was very interesting, but like Pat Kirwin said on Sirius this is the NFL these D coaches can run a 34 or 43 it is just a matter of what they prefer.

Great... we have the K.C. staff from a 2-14 team... and possibly the DC from last year. Even the Bills beat the Chiefs the last two years.

I have heard through a source in Green Bay (who used to work close to Sanders with the Packers) who says that Gailey has spoken to former Bills’ defensive line coach Bob Sanders and has given…

I hope my sources are right on the DC too so this sort of makes up for me being wrong about the Bills intending on contacting Jason Garrett. I am still pissed about that.
