If he planned on hiring one of the names we have already heard about...
Jim Bates, Dave Campo, Clancy Pendergast, Ted Cottrell, Vic Fangio, Bill Lewis, Jon Tenuta
It would have already happened. There's no reason for the deal not to have gotten done if the Bills were interested in those guys, unless they all turned them down. So this leaves me to think one of 3 things...
1. The Bills are waiting for a college coach to take over. The names I have seen by Bills fans on other sites are...
a. Kevin Steele (coached with Dom Capers and he's friends with Gailey) coaches both the 4-3 and 3-4. Was interested in the DC job in Tennessee but backed out around the same time Gailey got the job. He's also a big recruiter for Clemson, so that might be why it's been delayed.
b. George Edwards (worked as LB coach in Dallas when Gailey was there)
c. Mark D'Onofrio (not much of a connection, but is a good coach and has coached against Gailey a bunch)
d. Jim Jeffcoat (I heard his name before the Bills kept Sanders, he coached with Gailey in Dallas as DL coach)
e. Bud Foster (no connection, but he coached against Chan Gailey a lot and is considered one of the better DCs in college football)
2. The Bills are waiting for one of the guys that is in the Super Bowl. If we don't hire a DC before this week is over, then we know that is probably the reason. There aren't many choices, but these names stuck out to me...
a. Rod Perry (worked in San Diego until 2001 and has been around coaching as an assistant for many years)
b. Joe Vitt (Born in Syracuse, NY and has a long resume)
c. Adam Zimmer (son of Mike Zimmer, no connection whatsoever)
3. The Bills are trying to get one of the names at the beginning of my post, but no one is interested, so they will probably just promote Bob Sanders to DC.
Either way...this is definitely going to be an interesting week. If it's a college guy, look for them to sign by Thursday or Friday. If not, then who knows. Either way, I just wanted to throw some more names out there.
