    Davis says Couch still Browns' QB

    Tim Couch's job may be more secure than he or anyone else in Cleveland ever imagined.

    Browns coach Butch Davis seemed to diffuse his team's simmering quarterback controversy Thursday by saying that Couch had never lost his starting position to Kelly Holcomb.

    After labeling the quarterback issue as "much ado about nothing," Davis said his two QBs have been enjoying a healthy competition during the club's recent "quarterback school" workouts.

    Davis gives Couch the edge

    BEREA - Since Kelly Holcomb threw for 429 yards in the Browns' 36-33 playoff loss at Pittsburgh on Jan. 5, Coach Butch Davis has had several chances to endorse Tim Couch as his starting quarterback and had remained non-committal.

    Davis took a strong step the other way on Thursday, when he said it was essentially Couch's job to lose.

    ``I think it's fair to say that Tim has not really lost the job,'' Davis said.

    ``I think it's a bad assessment when people say it's 50-50. It really probably isn't. Kelly's performance opened people's eyes that maybe it should be an opportunity to where anybody could get the job.
