(Running a series profiling players that could fit into the Buffalo Bills’ plans leading up to the start of free agency on March 5. Today we look at Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy)

To conclude anything other than Jimmy Kennedy being a bust to this point would be kidding yourself. The defensive tackle who completely dominated at Penn State in college was the 12th overall draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2003. He came with a high pedigree, including being named the Big Ten defensive linemen of the year and an All-American as chosen by the Sporting News. Kennedy finished his Penn State career with 39 tackles for loss; good for a tie with LaVar Arrington for eighth place on the school’s all-time list.

But since that time he’s dramatically underachieved in the NFL and found himself bounced around four organizations. After getting a $5-million signing bonus with the Rams, Kennedy managed just four sacks in four seasons before being dealt to Denver in 2007 for a sixth round draft pick. He barely had a cup of coffee with the Broncos before being released during training camp.

In December of 2007 the Chicago Bears signed him and he played in three games. As a restricted free agent following the season, Jacksonville signed him to a one-year, $650,000 offer sheet the Bears declined to match. But his time in Jacksonville lasted just a half season, registering five tackles and a sack before the club waived him.

Things began to turn around for Kennedy when Minnesota gave him a shot late in the 2008 season. Finally showing progression under defensive line coach Karl Dunbar and getting to rotate behind Kevin and Pat Williams, Kennedy had a strong 2009, recording 18 tackles and tying a career-high with three sacks in limited duty.

Now that Kennedy is an unrestricted free agent, it remains a mystery if other teams envision Kennedy as a late bloomer that’s finally tapping the potential he showed coming out of college, or a guy that simply played well in a Vikings system that made the most of his talents and hid his liabilities.

He’s been in the league six years and only his latest could be measured as a triumph. Perhaps the Bills will look past pre-2009 and give the guy a chance to build on the success he had with the Vikings.

He certainly has the right body to play in their new defense. At 6’4”, 320 pounds Kennedy is bigger than Marcus Stroud, Kyle Williams and Spencer Johnson. He’s also more of a space eater than a lot of other unrestricted free agent tackles set to hit the market, including Tank Johnson, Fred Roberts and Ian Scott. Kennedy could be the gap clogger needed to free their linebackers to make more plays.

With Aubrayo Franklin already the victim of the franchise tag and Vince Wilfork and Casey Hampton likely to follow, the pickings are already slim at a position the Bills absolutely need to bolster.

The Bills will unquestionably select a defensive tackle at some point of the draft, but unless it comes quite early it’s unpromising he’d contribute much early on. Defensive tackles rarely come into the league and dominate early on.

Kennedy could be plugged in and at 30 years old his best days should hardly be behind him.

Buffalo signed a former Minnesota reserve to their team two years ago and Johnson has been a solid backup who may start at end in 2010 with the defensive schematic switch. Maybe they can strike again with another Viking.

I think Kennedy is good back up plan if Hampton does indeed receive the tag. He at the very least would be a great depth pick up.

That pretty much makes up all of UFA this year with an uncapped year and so many RFAs' backup plans and depth. Very few sure-fire starters.

I very well realize this. Like your last article on Edwards. He'd be a great pick but is going to cost a ton of money. The Bills best plan of attack should be to get quality depth guys for the front 7. Nick Easion at D End, Larry Foote at ILB or a Scott Fujita. I hope Hampton hits the market cause I think Whaley could swoon him to come here but I think Nick Easion will be the guy.

Maybe Hampton has a thing for porn, which I know I am profiling, but I would assume most NT's do. That gives us two ties...the relationship from Pittsburgh, and porn. I like our chances.

Is Kennedy going to get big $$? If the FA crop is going to be paper-thin, it would be nice if ol'Buddy was "in the zone" with his talent evaluation. Some low risk/high yield players would be great for our team. I am excited that Nix has a successful history of talent evaluation, about 95 years or so, as that has been something this organization has been missing for so long.

I could definitely see the Bills interest in Kennedy. They are going to carry 6 or 7 DL in the 3-4 and I'd say more than half of them are going to be new.

I would be really happy if we made this move. He would fit in well, be an immediate upgrade, and give us a little more flexibility in the draft.

I think Buffalo would also have a great shot at landing him since we have a huge hole at NT, which means we might give him his best chance at being a starter. I'm assuming that since he's considered somewhat of a risk too that most teams would include a lot of incentives in his deal so he's going to want to go where he has the best chance of cashing in.

There's not many-- but there are a few guys like Kennedy, Kevin Walter and a few guys like that who stand to benefit with this severely depleted FA pool.

Walter is a the perfect example. In a normal year, Vincent Jackson, Austin Miles, Malcom Floyd, Braylon Edwards would all be UFA and Walter would be down the list. NOw, Walter is probably the most sought after offensive UFA on the market and will get paid big time.

Kennedy will too, though nowhere to that extent. But he should get a good deal somewhere.

I played against big Jimmy in High School. It would be great for him to get back to N.Y. GO BILLS:shutup:

Pat-Does it not concern you that even though Kennedy has ideal 3-4 NT weight, he has never been used as one? Im not sure how good of a fit he is, and if he's not a better 4-3 NT as opposed to a 3-4.

I don't think anyone would argue that Jimmy Kennedy is anything like a sure thing. I think perhaps one point that is at least hinted at by the article is that there may not be a sure thing in free agency at a price Buffalo can afford, or at least chooses to afford. If there's no sure thing, then you look for the next best thing perhaps. Kennedy hasn't played the nose in a 3-4, but he has the size needed. Hopefully, after all this time in NFL strength and conditioning programs he's strong enough to tie up a couple blockers, which is the main thing you want him to do. The Bills may decide someone like Kennedy can at least plug the hole until they can get someone who can really create havoc at NT.

Another high Penn State draft pick... Another bust

I am sorry it is just too easy to make fun of the big 10, when will they ever drop the ego and delusions and drop to d2 football
