Def sounds like a good back up pick-up. Much better than a McKinney

He's probably the reason Incognito didnt get tendered.

Not that I have a problem with him, but isn't this a guy you look to bring in for a visit and to sign in late march or april, not on day one?

As a guard and backup center, it might be that the FO had him in their sights all along, especially with the 'familiarity' aspect. This might also explain why they weren't interested in tendering Incognito.

Buddy Nix did say he wouldnt sign any big names FA's so im not surprised to see a lower names guy brought in first. Wasnt Hangarnter our first visit last year as well?

Scouting report courtesy of ESPN:

Comment: Smith had been pretty much a career backup up until he started seven games in 2008. He is athletic with good short-area quickness, agility, balance and body control. His most glaring weakness is his inability to stop powerful bull rushers on the inside. He understands angles and can react to movement and adjust to counter moves. He is more of a finesse blocker than a road-grader. He gives the Chiefs solid depth in that he can back up multiple positions.

Beat me to it.
I would say that the reality of this years FA, is that if you are interested in a guy, whether as a backup or starter, you are well advised to get them sooner rather than later.
I really don't think that Nix is that interested in 'names' either, unless they are guys who would be a perfect 'fit'. I'm not so sure that this particular 'work in progress' is worth spending excessive $ on as yet. The only exception would be @ QB tbh, but I'm not convinced there's the right deal out there, unless it was Pennington for a couple of years - and he wouldn't be that expensive.

you mean a linemen from a worse o-line then ours? i can't wait!

I think that the reality of the situation is that - just like we had no f-in idea who Nix & Co. were looking at in their coaching search - we have no f-in idea what FAs they are interested in, who they are talking to etc.

For all we know, Nix is in Philly right now stalking McNabb. Or he could be in his office, making calls. Or he could be at the Anchor Bar. Bottom line is that this FO doesn't give out a lot of info about what they're up to until it happens. They value secrecy.

Thus, even though we're not hearing anything, I think it's safe to assume they're not just sitting on their ass right now.

Except it's not depth. Every year fans look at players we pick up and say "Ooo! Great depth pickup!" except the Bills are picking him up to be a starter. We're just that pathetic that other teams garbage are our starters.

Listen, sub-300 pound linemen are hard to get these days so the Bills should pounce on this guy if that is what they are after.

This guy rated better than both of our young starting guards and can play multiple positions. This would be a terrible pickup for depth.

Yep, according to Profootballfocus.com, he was the 23rd rated Guard (higher than Incognito) in the NFL last season. I'm not sure how much stock I put into their numbers, but it's interesting nonetheless:

Well, he's a KC lineman who had his best year when Gailey was the OC. That means that, without strings, Gailey likes him. Take that for what it's worth.

any website who's metrics say that Fred Jackson is a better RB then Adrian Peterson, Ronnie Brown and Joseph Addai is not what I'd call a useful "resource".. or that Ray Rice is the best running back in the nfl; or that Vernon Carey is a top 10 tackle.. or Leonard Davis is a top 20 guard...

yeah.. no thank you.

did you know Brian Scott is the 19th best OLB in the NFL? or Poz is the 7th best MLB (i like Poz but he's not a top 10 MLB, and according to their numbers, Poz was the best pass coverage MLB in the NLF, by a mile i might add... i mean it isn't even close)

yeah... no thank you.

At least it has Ryan Denney and Chris Kelsay as two of the worst DE's in football! Maybe it got something right?

haha that's why I said "not sure how much stock I put into their numbers." Some of their metrics seem spot-on, and others are quite far-fetched. I just thought it was interesting that an objective evaluation service had Smith rated #23 among Guards.

Its humorous, KC had a brutal OL last year and we pickup one of there backups who was forced to start. We in essence picked up there version of a Bell

That stupid site ranked Peyton Manning as the 6th best QB in nfl.

Vincent Jackson ranked num 1 wr and Randy Moss at 21 lol

As long as the contract represents fair value to the Bills, I don't mind him signing now.
