This year's Stanley Cup final may be unique for potential on-the-ice drama. The largely unheralded Mighty Ducks of Anaheim take on the playoff-seasoned New Jersey Devils for a chance at history. From a television perspective, some have said this series is a battle between "Almost Los Angeles" vs. "Kind of New York" -- television ratings are expected to be mixed on ABC and ESPN. n South Florida, the Florida Panthers purportedly lost $64.7 million last year, and Panthers co-owner Alan Cohen warned that he "would put the team up for sale if the league does not fix the long-term economic problems."
There have been some bright spots, however. The Buffalo Sabres were sold to Rochester billionaire B. Thomas Golisano two weeks after his $92 million bid was approved by the United States Bankruptcy Court and the NHL Board of Governors.
Three weeks after the Sabres purchase, the Ontario Superior Court approved the U.S. $71.8 million purchase of the Ottawa Senators by Biovail chairman Eugene Melnyk. The complex bankruptcy restructuring included the purchase of the Corel Centre -- built for Canadian $220 million six years ago -- at a value of $30 million.
