View Full Version : Culpepper to Bills: 'I can be the guy'

ORLANDO, Fla. -- I spoke with the NFL's most proactive free agent Monday.

Daunte Culpepper strolled around the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes, happy to be recognized and hoping to plant an idea.

Culpepper doesn't have an agent. The three-time Pro Bowler represents himself, and what better way to market himself to prospective employers by attending the NFL owners meetings, a convention of executives and head coaches from all 32 teams?

Wow. Well I give the guy credit for representing himself and pounding the pavement like that...but we already have enough QB's that turn the ball over like it's their job, so no thanks Daunte.

If Nix and Gailey think Culpepper is the answer I think full panic mode for the fans will be warranted. How many years has it been since he was decent?

He couldn't be any worse than what the Bills already have on the roster. He might actually be the best of the bums.

He needs to go to the CFL

If their plan is to draft a guy and groom him on the bench for a season, Daunte wouldn't necessarily be the worst guy to hold down the position for a year I guess.

He's

nowhere near a good starter
but better than when he first came back from his injury (with the Dolphins)
and possibly a bit better than what's already on the roster.

Chan Gailey didn't sound like a HC ready to sign Daunte Culpepper. Asked about Culpepper, Gailey said he hasn't seen him play in a long time- Adam Schefter

HELL NO!!!!!!!

this guy is a turnover machine.

Obviously the two major concerns are injuries and turnovers. If he could prove completely healthy I wouldn't mind adding him to the roster. Turnovers don't bother me much because he won't be depended on to shoulder the load as with his former teams.

Washed up or not, I feel we need a QB vet just like we needed a couple 3-4 vets to make the transition easier for the rest of the players. It scares me that Brohm, Edwards or potentially a rookie have Fitz as their "experienced" guy to look to.

Buffalo is and has been so weak at the QB position for so long, it's probably becoming a place where the likes of Culpepper (and other have beens) can make a prod like this and expect some serious consideration.

I would have a problem with Culpepper. He isn't good at all. If you want Culpepper starting, you might as well just stick with Fitz.

With as many Vick supporters as there are I'm surprised your all so close minded to it.

He was GREAT in Minnesota. He had a serious injury and the Dolphins rushed him back too soon. Then in Oakland he fought and won them a couple games. In Detroit, they were just terrible. You can't put it all on him.

I'd welcome him to the team to compete. Why the hell not? He's big, mobile and a strong arm. He still has the same brain that had a 121 passer rating for the season in 04. (And before you say Moss Moss Moss, Randy was injured a lot that year and some of Culpeppers best games were without Randy)

I don't have a problem with them signing him for competition. I think he's better than Fitz and Brohm, and probably about the same as Edwards post concussions.

03-23-2010, 09:23 AM
He is a decent backup at BEST right now and now we can cut FItz and edwards and draft a late round QB like Skelton.

QB's: Brian brohm, John skelton, and daunte culpepper
That would be a Qb compitition

You tell me??? Rob Johnson, Alex Van Pelt, Bobby Joe Hobert, Drew Bledsoe, JP Losman, Kelly Holcomb, Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Shane Matthews, Travis Brown, Todd Collins, Brian Brohm, Gibran Hamdan.

Do some people still wonder why the Bills have basically sucked for 10+ years? It starts and ends with a Quarterback. See above.

Ed
03-23-2010, 10:35 AM
Why not bring him in? He says in the article that he just wants a chance to compete and would accept a backup role if that was the best fit for the team. I think he's one of the few veteran qb's that could actually bring some leadership by being a good mentor for the younger guys.

What's the expression, "Meh?" If he were signed in place of Fitz, I wouldn't hate it, but I wouldn't cry if it didn't happen. When he's healthy, Culpepper is the prototypical NFL QB. He's big, has a great arm, and he's tough to bring down, much like Ben Roethlisberger or Joe Flacco. On the other hand, I don't think he's great at reading defenses or that he makes good decisions all the time. I think that's where his interceptions come from. The question I have is why do you get rid of a 29 year old QB to sign a 33 year old QB if he's not clearly superior. I don't have a good answer.

What would it hurt picking up Culpepper to add into the open competition?

At least we'd then have a guy on this roster at the position who's had some success in this league.

Unlike the 3 jamokes we have right now.

Wasn't he the starting QB for much of Detroit's winless season?

I remember watching part of that season's Thanksgiving game. Detroit was being humilliated on national TV, and there he was joking and laughing in the 4th Qtr. He doesn't care anymore, he just wants a paycheck.

dplus47
03-23-2010, 01:14 PM
I don't think it could hurt. He's a lot more accurate than Fitzpatrick, less afraid to chuck it than Edwards, and has a lot more experience than all 3 QB's. If you're going to be a conservative offense, I don't understand going with a guy who is inaccurate. You gotta get some bang for your buck on pass attempts, IMO.

Therefore, Fitzpatrick is only a (bad) stopgap at the moment, and if you think Edwards has really lost it, what do you have to lose by bringing in a vet?

I completely agree. It cannot hurt to bring this guy in to try out. Worse case scenario he can't beat out any of the bums on our roster and we cut him prior to the season.

When was the last time ANYONE listed us as their first choice? I'm not saying this should be the impetus for bringing the guy in, but at the very least it shows a willingness to come to Buffalo to show & prove. An occurence that has become very rare as of late.

Or it shows that nobody in the league wants him anymore and he is beyond desperate. Let's see... Oakland (Check)...Detroit (Check)....Buffalo

I said this MONTHS ago, Culpepper would be a good option for 1-2 years, even if we draft Clausen or Bradford with our 1st, give the rookie time to learn, history will tell you that a QBs chances are much better when he sits on the bench for his rookie year.

Sure, he's probably desperate and figures since we are in an equally comprimised position that we'll give him a shot. I buy that. But again, what do we have to lose here??? This certainly will not preclude us from pursuing the QB of the future for this franchise. Or are you comfortable with the rich stable of backups we presently have??

He's been beyond bad. But I'm sure its a step up from the putrid back up QB's that we have currently. They are QB's in name only. At least Culpepper had SOME success, albeit many moons ago. If the he sucks it up in camp, you cut the guy- no harm no foul.

Yes, because I believe he is young enough and healthy enough to still be able to play effectively. I'm not against bringing certain players in, just those big names that are now so washed up that they have to beg for jobs.

I don't see why we wouldn't bring him in.

The fact of the matter is, he is only 33 not 43, and before his injury he was one of the best QB's in the league. The guy threw for nearly 5k yards and 40 TD's in 04'!

He was a better QB than anyone else available. If and that is a big if, he is 100% healthy Gailey could definitely utilize his talent.

I am not going to push for Culpepper, but lets just get a couple facts straight.

1) In Detroits winless season, Pep played in 5 games.
2) He did NOT play for TB last season, that was Leftwich
3) It's been 6 years since he played a full season. 6 years.
4) The last year he played a full season he threw for over 4500 yards, had 39 tds/11 ints. Rating that year was 110.
5) Since 2004, his stats have been absolutely horrible. 20 tds in 5 seasons vs 32 ints.

After looking at that, and some of his "highlights" over the past couple of seasons, can't see any reason we would waste our time with him.
And I HATE our current crop of QBs.

Does Randy Moss come with him? Cullpepper's best play was to throw a 50 yard rainbow into triple coverage and have Moss snatch it and score, used to work once a game when he with the Vikes. Without Moss his favorite play is hold the ball until the ball gets stripped out of his 7 year old girl sized hands. His 2nd favorite play is tuck and run which hasn't worked as well since his knee got turned into hamburger. I really can't see us being interested.
