As I reported a few weeks ago, this dude has been working out like a fein. He's been training with the guy (cant remember his name now) that trains Ray Lewis and some other big time NFL LBs

According to him he's put on 10 pounds in the last month.

I know a lot of people don't like him right now, but I think with this new defense he's going to become a very good rush OLB in this league.

To me it's almost like we have another high rookie draft pick on this team already.

How dare you even suggest that Maybin could improve now that he'll be playing the right position. He did nothing last year, thus he'll never be worth a damn.

Is he going to be fast enough to be effective when he puts on more weight though?

He was in the low 220's coming out of college and bulked up about 15-20 lbs before going to the NFL. Another 10 lbs and that's 30 lbs in a year. Granted, it's clearly muscle and not fat, but it's still another 30 lbs to move around.

I get why people would be skeptical. . But in his defense, he was hardly put in a position to succeed under Jauron and Fewell.

He's got talent.

It's kinda like drafting a big, tall WR and then putting him in the slot.. It won't work

He only had one good year in college, he's undersized, he did literally nothing last year and could have had Orakpo round out the criticisms. This was a BAD pick that will haunt this organization for years.

I never root for Bills players to fail, and I hope this guy turns it around. But hope is different from expectations. Given his size, his short college career, and his complete lack of performance last season, there is no reason to expect that he'll turn around.

The reports on him coming out of college said that he has the frame to add weight and maintain his quickness. Honestly, how they truly know that, I'm not sure, though he does have a tall frame that should be able to support 250-260 pounds. I also don't know how long it might take him to get used to the extra weight.

However, I do believe that he'll benefit from a full offseason of real NFL training. Before the draft it was obvious he just wanted to add weight (he was at 249 for the NFL combine) and put up good numbers. Now he'll be used to the grind of the NFL and working out at all the minicamps and all of training camp. Hopefully it will help him.

One thing that was universal about him coming out was because of his age he has the ability to grow into whatever a team wants him to be size wise. I think he'll be on the field and productive this year. When's your interview with him Pat?

Most athletes who train to add bulk/weight also continue their speed workouts and agility workouts while adding that weight. They get used to it as it packs on. Speed for Maybin shouldn't be an issue.

Is it his fault the crap coaches we had put him at DE when it was obvious to everyone here he should of been learning OLB in the NFL?? I dont think any of that is his fault. Those numbers are not correct, 10lbs of muscle in a month is impossible, sorry, but that's not realistic. You're lucky to put on 10lbs of muscle in a year, unless you're going through puberty, then I can see 10lbs of muscle in a year.

Put it this way, that's like saying a 190lbs man could add 30 lbs of muscle in 3 months to compete in a heavyweight bodybuilding class, that's just not a realistic goal, I refuse to believe such puffery.

http://www.thefactsaboutfitness.com/research/fail.htm

For example, someone who weighs 180 pounds can expect to gain anywhere from 3-7 pounds of lean mass over a 6-week period. For every pound of muscle you gain, expect to add anywhere from 0.5 to 1 pound of fat. So, if you want to add 10 pounds of lean muscle, expect to gain roughly 15-20 pounds in weight.

I'm just telling you, it's unrealistic, you'll eventually hit plateaus, but in the beginning there is obvious progress, but then it slows down. Just trust me, the 10lbs Maybin likely put on, if he is lucky is 5lbs of muscle and the other half is likely fat but mostly water. He is probably on creatine and his muscles are retaining water better, once he stops taking the creatine the weight comes off.

Gaining six pounds in a week does not sound like a good plan and is sure to end in the same result as last season when he lost weight once camp started. He was bigger last year at this time.

Hate comes when you underperform the level at which you are compensated. This is not unique to athletes. Maybin is compensated like a high draft pick and thus has the expectation that he will perform to that level. Same with A-Rod making $250 million, if he is going to be the highest paid player by a wide margin than he has to play like the best player by a wide margin.

A good friend of mine is a power lifter. I always bounce threads like this off him for his opinion. His point is always the same, these guys are paid to workout, eat right and train hard. In most cases they have been doing it for years. They're in amazing shape and their bodies work differently than ours do. Adding 10lbs of muscle in a month maybe extreme, but is not impossible.

Based on his limited action last year, Maybin's problem isn't size it is getting off a block. Great pass rushers sense how they are being blocked and are able to counter it and defeat those blocks. Every time I saw Maybin on the field, he was engaged. He needs to shed quickly and let his natural speed take over.

That said, he is learning a new scheme and is still very inexperienced. It is too early to give up on him, and you have to hope that he will improve with coaching. Some guys do, some don't.

Still, 10lbs of muscle in a month is at a rate of 120lbs of muscle in a year, no way that's possible, at the very least, I've never seen or heard of anybody doing that.

It's not a matter of giving up. You see a guy like Trent Edwards for example. He's at least shown in small scopes the ability to perform at an NFL level.

Maybin had a whole season to show SOMETHING but failed to. Not even on special teams, where I'm willing to bet he was the only 1st rounder on the field in most cases.

Personally, I just didn't witness any real talent. Everybody speaks of his quickness but that sure didn't seem evident. He seemed rigid, stiff, awkward, and uncoordinated.

I'm sure I'll be personally attacked for describing the things I saw on TV, but hey, you can't win them all.

I went from 160 to 190 over one summer because I was busting my butt with my coaches to put on muscle weight. Oddly, that was 13 years ago and I've only gained 5 pounds since. I have no more muscle though.

Anyway, hanging out with Mo'Nique can make you put on weight real fast!

when you have control of your body you can do it. 10lbs a month does not translate to 30 lbs over 3 months.

I hit the gym 6 days a week for the past 12 years. I can add 5 pounds or drop 5 pounds within 10 days.

A full off-season training program, attending OTCs and training camp, a full NFL season's experience, better coaching, and playing in a more appropriate position.

Plenty of reasons for me to give the kid a shot before calling him a wasted pick.

If the arguments against Maybin succedding are the ones you list above, then I'm pumped.

First of all, he's undersized for a DE. But he's 6-4 and somewhere around 250-260. That's not even CLOSE to undersized as a 3-4 OLB, it's pretty much prototypical size.

Second, it's very possible that he did nothing last year because he was a) a rookie and b) playing the wrong position.

Third, the fact that he only had one impressive college season before leaving school early isn't an argument against his talent. Sure, it'd be more reasonable to get excited about him now if he had a longer record of production, but at the same time, the fact that he was a young rookie is another reason to give him a pass on last year.

'Myopic' means that someone's taking a very limited or narrow view of a situation, and I don't see how that applies to mayotm's post. There are very good reasons to be excited about Maybin's chances as a 3-4 OLB, just as there are reasons to be cautious.
