INDIANAPOLIS – The beginning of Jim Kubiak’s latest stint with the Colts turned out to be the end of Jim Druckenmiller’s time in Indianapolis.

Druckenmiller, who signed with the Colts as a free agent this off-season, was released to make room for Kubiak, who joined the Colts Wednesday after two seasons with the Dallas Desperadoes of the Arena Football League.

The Colts also released first-year wide receiver Joey Getherall.

Druckenmiller, 30, had signed with the Colts this off-season after being out of the NFL since 1999.

“A lot of things went into it, really,” Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said Thursday after a summer school practice session at the Union Federal Football Center. “Jim Druckenmiller was doing a good job and I think would have come on.”

Dungy said the reason for the move was two-fold.

First, the team has been impressed with the development of James MacPherson, a rookie free agent from Wake Forest University. The Colts wanted to get MacPherson more repetitions during practice.

Also, the signing of Kubiak – who spent time with the Colts in training camp in 1998 and 1999 – gave the Colts a veteran with some understanding of the offense.

“We were real happy with James (MacPherson) and wanted to see him get a little more work,” Dungy said. “Jim Kubiak’s a guy who knew the offense. It hasn’t changed that much since he was here, and we thought he would be able to function with fewer reps.

“That was really kind of what went into the decision.”

MacPherson started 23 of 32 games for Wake Forest and completed 349 of 639 passes for 4,716 yards and 16 touchdowns with 21 interceptions.

He was recruited to Wake Forest by Colts quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell.

Kubiak, who played collegiately at the Naval Academy, originally signed with the Carolina Panthers as a free agent in 1996. In addition to his stints in the Colts’ camps, he was signed to the New York Jets’ practice squad briefly in late 1999
