D.C. sniper victim spends day at McNair football camp

NASHVILLE, TN, June 7, 2003 – A special guest stopped by the Steve “Air” McNair Football Camp on Friday at Goodpasture Christian School.

Iran Brown spent the day walking the halls and fields of the camp getting his fill of football and guidance from McNair.

Smiles a plenty hovered over the group.

Brown, 14, was the youngest victim of the Washington D.C. area sniper last fall. He was shot Oct. 7 outside his Bowie, Md. middle school. He sustained major injuries to his abdomen.

John Allen Muhammad and Lee Malvo were arrested in October and charged with the multiple shootings, which left 10 people dead and three wounded, while paralyzing the Washington Metropolitan area for a period of three weeks. In all, authorities say they have linked the men to 19 shootings and 13 deaths across the country.

The teenager has gained national attention since the incident, visiting with First Lady Laura Bush and Orlando Magic guard Tracy McGrady last year. He also received a personally-autographed jersey and note of encouragement from Eddie George last fall. But a day at McNair camp wasn’t about attention. It was about being a normal kid.

McNair said he first met Brown during the Titans’ trip to Baltimore Nov. 24. Tennessee lost the game 13-12, but the trip was made brighter through dinner with Brown and his family.

“We’ve been keeping in touch ever since,” said McNair, who finished third in league MVP voting last season and set career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. “The guy is very blessed. He came down here to put his past behind him.”

Brown and family members arrived in Nashville Thursday night at McNair’s invitation. McNair said the day was a great opportunity for the teenager to be around kids and sports fans his own age.

In light of the added attention, Brown and family members did not wish to be interviewed.
