Former Cards safety close to multi-year deal

In a move that should upgrade the interior of a secondary in flux, the San Diego Chargers have reached contract agreement in principle with free agent safety Kwamie Lassiter, one of the top players still available in the unrestricted pool.

Agent Jim Solano emphasized Monday morning that the contract was not yet completed, but hoped to have it finalized later in the day. League sources said that most of the major components of the deal have been agreed upon and that Lassiter, 33, will eventually sign what is believed to be a multi-year contract....

Another Zonie is fleeing the heat for San Diego.

Safety Kwamie Lassiter, who spent eight years with the Cardinals, signed a three-year deal Monday with the Chargers and is expected to compete with Ryan McNeil for the starting free safety job.

"Any time you can add a tough, hard-nosed, experienced and productive player to your football team, it can only be a positive," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "We feel like we've signed an outstanding player in Kwamie Lassiter."...

Chargers count on ex-Cardinal at safety
The revolving door was in full spin yesterday with the Chargers' secondary.

Several hours after announcing the signing of unrestricted free safety Kwame Lassiter to a three-year deal for undisclosed financial terms, the Chargers released Rogers Beckett, their projected starter at strong safety.

What the moves ultimately will mean for the secondary remains to be seen. For the moment, coach Marty Schottenheimer said he plans to have Lassiter, Ryan McNeil and Jerry Wilson compete at free safety, while second-year pro Vernon Fox and rookies Terrence Kiel and Hanik Milligan battle at strong safety. ...
