I just think the Bills are really serious about running the ball this coming season and Lynch is the only back in the mold of power or grinder style. Plus you have to think about the injury issues.

The difficult part is to make everyone happy with their roles, in particular Lynch. We'll see Chan's people skill there.

We most likely will have more than one back on the field.

We thought that last year with Lynch and Jackson.

We also thought we might have an OC that knew what the heck he was doing

Officially Curtis Modkins has the title (and RB coach) but Gailey will be running the show.

Somebody do this research:

How did Gailey's offenses rank historically?

Gailey spent two seasons as the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator improving the team from an 11th ranked offense in his first year (1996) to a 7th ranked offense the next. In comparison, the next three seasons without Gailey saw their offensive rank dip to 28th, 17th and 17th.

From 2000-2001 Gailey served as the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. His first season saw a middle of the road offense that ranked 16th in the NFL. The following season the team improved to the 8th ranked offense. Both seasons the Dolphins posted 11-5 records.

The Chiefs finished 26th in PPG in 2008.

you want Jackson or Spiller in there during short yardage because you can keep the D guessing.

Here's a good article on Gailey's performances prior to joining KC.

Or put Lynch in there and throw to him on a short route. He can catch too.

The operative word is missing from the thread title: HAD, as in, the Bills could have had a 4th. . . After we took Spiller, it's likely that teams will wait and see how little it will cost them to pick up our third RB.

I think that's spot on. There are absolutely going to be games where either Jackson or Spiller is banged up, especially later in the season. You need three backs, and in light of our, to be charitable, "unproven" passing game, might as well keep Lynch and have RB as a position of true strength. As you point out, that's of course assuming that all of them stay happy and motivated.

Assuming Spiller is what he's supposed to be, I don't think there's as good a 3-back stable in the league as Jackson/Lynch/Spiller. Maybe Dallas?

the only team i can think of that has a 3 back system is carolina with

williams
stewart
goodson

and dallas

jones

the league is so rough and tough right now that we need to seriously consider keeping lynch, hes are only power back and hes really good still... the only way im giving up lynch is for a proven stud LT or a stud pass rusher and even then im not going to do it probably. dallas has 3 backs and uses all of them the right way.. theres no reason why we cant be a top 8 rushing team this year, especially if bell and wood are 100% by august 1st...

I see us using lots of Two Back formations and putting Spiller out wide sometimes.

A lot more than just two teams run a 3 back system. New Orleans did it, the Pats do it, just to name two off the top of my head.

Lynch's contract this year is low, too. Something around 800-900k, so it's not like we are paying too much for him. He's on the roster, we will use him.

spiller in the slot when jackson and lynch in. otherwise get jackson and spiller in there.

plus, maybe occassional wishbone with all three in there.

ok, now i'm talking crazy.

The last thing I'm worried about is having three backs. I highly doubt we look back on the season and say, "if we only had one less RB." They will all serve their purpose and all fill a need. I don't see this as a long-term thing but it could definitely work for 2010.

We did use some 2 back sets.

Spiller could be on the field an awful lot, but often times as simply a 'decoy'.
He does look as though he has good hands tbh. We know Fred Jackson does. I think Gailey will likely come up with ways to have either Spiller or Jackson as pass options, with Lynch also in as RB. When Jackson gets the football in space, he's a rare handful. For opposing defences, let Spiller get the football in space, and you better just start lining up to defend an extra point. ;) - At least lets hope so. ;)

Spiller's gonna go all Chris Johnson on us and slowly phase the other two out.

Wildcat with Fred at QB, and Spiller and Lynch as split backs.

Seriously, if we want the most talented players on the field, that would be all three RBs, Evans and Nelson.

Didn't the Giants win a super bowl with Bradshaw, Jacobs, and Ward?

I'd think their defensive players had some to say about it.

I'm really high on that UDFA RB we got, Bell.
