The 2-week minicamp that continues through Thursday has offered the Eagles a glimpse of what their backfield might look like a year from now.

With Duce Staley boycotting, most of the running-back reps with the first team have gone to Correll Buckhalter and Brian Westbrook.

Staley is expected to be at Lehigh on July 25, when Eagles training camp opens - Eagles sources say his agent, Brantley Evans, assured the team of that when Evans broke the news that Staley wouldn't be attending minicamp. But the new contract Staley apparently hoped to obtain by skipping these workouts seems no closer to happening than it did a week ago. (Again yesterday, Evans did not return phone calls from the Daily News.)

The Eagles certainly don't want to release Staley, with Buckhalter coming off left ACL surgery and second-year man Westbrook still trying to prove he can be more than a third-down back. Most likely, Staley will play for the Eagles this season - without a contract for 2004, knowing that if Buckhalter and Westbrook look good, Staley almost certainly will be writing the final chapter of his Eagles career. How all that will factor out is anybody's guess
