It was right around this time a year ago that the Eagles decided they needed somebody other than Freddie Mitchell to line up as their slot receiver.

That somebody became Antonio Freeman, a veteran free agent who had been released by the Green Bay Packers after seven mostly successful seasons. When Freeman signed in the middle of training camp, you could almost hear the collective sigh from Eagles fans.

The words that went along with that sigh could be heard on talk radio: Oh, great, they wasted a first-round pick on a guy who can't even win the job as their No. 3 receiver in his second year. What are they, stupid or something?
