J.J. Stokes clearly is the Denver Broncos' backup plan.

But whether the free agent wants to reside behind three others on the team's depth chart, at least initially, was one of the main issues that was addressed during face-to-face meetings last week between the former San Francisco receiver and Broncos officials.

Considering that Rod Smith, Ed McCaffrey and Ashley Lelie give Denver a solid 1-2-3 punch on paper for 2003, why shouldn't Stokes jump at a better opportunity for playing time that might exist immediately, say, in Jacksonville, which contacted his representative Monday?

"And that's a legitimate question," Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist retorted.

But while immediate playing time might seem out of reach, Sundquist said, one injury can change all that. And the future beyond the upcoming season also is unknown.
