Broncos lineman is opening eyes with work on defense

And in this installment of Extreme Makeover, we present the startling transformation of Dorsett Davis.

The Denver Broncos defensive lineman was a non-participant in all 16 games as a rookie. He often had the look and demeanor of someone who never had strayed far from small-town Cleveland - Mississippi, not Ohio - his hometown.

But just more than a year after he came to the club as a third-round pick from Mississippi State, Davis' on-field strides have to be considered as metamorphic as anything out of reality TV cosmetic surgery. Like Trevor Pryce several years earlier, Davis seems to have watched, listened and learned in his first year and appears ready for a breakthrough.

On Monday, the fourth day of the team's June mini-camp, Davis continued to run with the first-team defense as a "three-technique" tackle, supplanting, for the moment, Lional Dalton.

Part of the reason for the switch is that Davis' talent seems suited to Denver's new scheme under defensive coordinator Larry Coyer, a plan predicated on quick penetration from the pass rush (with 2.8 seconds to the quarterback considered optimal by the front four). Like Pryce, with whom Davis shares a body type and who also played the waiting game as a rookie, Davis seems to have that quick jump off the ball.
