Brown on hold; Bears sign Odom

With contract negotiations for safety Mike Brown in a holding pattern after a weekend huddle, the Bears signed the first of their 12 draft picks Monday.

Purdue linebacker Joe Odom, the club's first selection in the sixth round, agreed to a three-year deal that includes a signing bonus of just less than $65,000, according to his agent, Jack Bechta.

Meanwhile, Ethan Lock, the agent for Brown, said his Saturday meeting at Halas Hall went well, but there is no timetable for the completion of a multiyear extension. Brown had a career-high 111 tackles last season and is due to become an unrestricted free agent after 2003. The Bears are believed to have increased their initial offer (six years for less than $12 million with a $2 million signing bonus up front).
