Houston Texans (http://billszone.com/team/18/nfl) LB Brian Cushing (http://billszone.com/player/19995/nfl) has been suspended for four games after violating the NFL (http://billszone.com/team/77/nfl)'s steroids policy, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. Cushing appealed the suspension in February, but found out Friday, May 7, that he had lost his appeal.

Though I can't stand to hear another one of our Baseball hero's getting caught, or having another steroid story shoved down our throats... I'd love to know how many football players are truly on Steroids, HGH, Test. Boosters, etc. I'm not sure on how strict the NFL's policy is on the 'juice', but if I'm correct, not as strict as MLB's, Olympic style, or internationally played sports. What percentage of football players do you think go beyond GNC and are on steroids of some sorts?

ROY should go to Jairus Byrd now.

We wish we could say we're surprised, but just look at the guy. Cushing will sit against Indianapolis, Washington, Dallas, and Oakland. To compensate, the Texans figure to move weak-side starter Zach Diles to "SAM" for the first month of the season, with Xavier Adibi joining the lineup. Houston's run defense is likely to take a hit. Cushing was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2009, helping the Texans to field the NFL's No. 13 overall defense. May. 7 - 6:38 pm et

Remember that "false" report that came out just before the draft? Here's one of about a million Cushing on 'roids (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/130955-brian-cushing-still-battling-steroid-speculation) articles that came out pre-draft last year.

I don't recall too many people clamoring for Cushing, or being pissed because we took Maybin over him. Other players, yes, but not Cushing.

Id be interested in hearing Jay Glazer's comments on this. He was doing some of his MMA training with Cushing.

"I can't pass judgment until after I talk to Brian," Glazer said. "I really hope the allegations aren't true. My partner Randy Couture and I -- and the program we created -- are all about outworking everybody else in the league, not taking shortcuts. I can tell you this in my time working with Brian -- I loved it. We really bonded. I expect to hear from Brian tonight."

i'm not worried about maybin one bit. he is just a workout freak. there's no way he is taking steroids. he would have been a lot more bulked up by now if he was.

That may well be the case. What did 'come out' though, was that Modrak wanted Cushing over Maybin, but Jauron had the pick. I think it's safe to say that generally, we would have preferred Oher to Maybin, but until this came out, would have also been happier with Cushing over Maybin.
Now, even if Maybin 'busts', providing he stays clean, I'd rather have him than Cushing. I'm also not sure that 4 games is an adequate suspension either. In other sports, guys who are found actually cheating, get banned for a year or two. I think a year is probably fair under the probable circumstances.
The problem is, there are lots of different 'circumstances'. I have a deal of sympathy with guys like the Williams 'wall', who actually didn't believe that they were taking anything that wasn't okay. A couple of games for guys under those circumstances, probably would suffice. Someone also mentioned Stroud in another thread. He was taking something that was prescribed to him by a doctor, and I believe told testers what he was taking. Hardly the act of a guy trying to 'hide' regular 'roid usage.
In all likelihood, the NFL testing is probably pretty decent - I'm sure their laboritories etc. are well enough funded. Where they do 'fall down', is in how stringent their requirements are for off season, off facility, testing. Olympic sports are very big on that aspect, and people have to make themselves available regularly, even if they aren't going to be tested. Random tests are much more the 'norm' than any other tests. People can miss the odd one of those random tests, but more than a couple of misses, and they can be suspended just for missing tests. The NFL doesn't necessarily lend itself all that well to that type of testing, especially as half the players are thick as two short planks, and probably aren't too sure what day it is. ;)
